This standard specifies the rules for spelling China names with Chinese phonetic alphabet, including the spelling rules of Chinese names and the spelling rules of minority names. In order to meet the application needs, some flexible treatment methods for special occasions are also given.
This standard is applicable to the spelling of hanyu pinyin letters of China place names in cultural education, editing and publishing, and Chinese information processing.

The following terms and definitions apply to this document.

Single surname and single character surname
China has only one surname, such as Zhang, Wang, Liu and Li.

Multiple surnames and multi-word surnames
Surnames with more than one word (usually consisting of two Chinese characters) in Chinese, such as Ouyang and Sima.

Double surname hyphen name
In Chinese, two surnames (single surname or compound surname) are juxtaposed, such as Zheng Li, Ouyang Chen and Zhou Dongfang.
4 General rules
4. 1 China names include Chinese names and minority names. Chinese names are spelled in Putonghua, and minority names are spelled in national pronunciation.
4.2 Names in this standard mainly refer to official names, that is, names that conform to general idioms.
4.3 According to the needs, the pen name, alias, legal name and stage name of the imitation name shall be written as the official name.
4.4 Individual flexible handling methods are only applicable to limited special occasions.

5. 1. 1 The official name of China consists of a surname and a first name. The first name and surname are written separately, with the surname in front and the first name in the back, and the names are separated by spaces. Compound surnames are linked together. First name and last name should be capitalized. For example:

5. 1.2 Double surnames (tied surnames) are combined as surnames, and a hyphen is added in the middle of the double surnames, with the first letter of each surname capitalized. For example:

Abbreviation of Chinese name, full name of surname, capitalization of first letter or capitalization of each letter. The first letter of each Chinese phonetic alphabet is capitalized, followed by a dot, and tone symbols can be omitted. For example:
Abbreviation: Li or Li Bruce Lee.

5. 1.5 The name index in Chinese information processing can capitalize all the letters of surnames and omit tone symbols. For example:
Yǐnq is spelled: Zhang.
