Over the years, there have been different opinions about where this famous play was written.
One theory is that it was written in Linchuan's home. According to Jiao Xun's plays, it is said that it is difficult for Tang Xianzu to think when writing the story of resurrection. One day, his family found him missing and looked for him everywhere. As a result, he found himself lying on the haystack in the yard, hiding his face and crying. The family asked him in surprise, what's wrong with you? He replied: "I wrote the lyrics of' Spring fragrance or old skirt'".
Another way of saying it is "writing on the road", that is, the creative activity of Peony Pavilion is carried out in the place where it stops on the way. Jiang said in "Sweeping Trace Chat": Tang Xianzu's teachers, Wen Sugong and Wang Xijue, were at home. I heard that Tang Xianzu went to the east of Lou County where he lived, and he lingered for many days without paying his respects, so he went to find out. Wang Xijue was very surprised, so he secretly bribed Tang Xianzu's entourage to see what Tang Xianzu was doing. It turned out that Tang wrote the Peony Pavilion every day on his way, and his entourage secretly showed it to Wang Xijue every day. When Tang Xianzu finished writing, he put it in his sleeve and showed it to Wang Xizhi. Wang said: I saw it long ago. Tang Xianzu said with shame, I was going to write four dreams, but this is only one of them, and there are still three unfinished. Wang Xijue was anxious to read it, and Tang Xianzu finished the remaining three scripts in one day.
The above did not explain the specific location of "Yu Lu", which is the route. However, there is a very important record in Volume XIII "The First House Garden" of the New County Records of Xukun: there is a Taishifu in Kunshan County, where Taifuxu applied for residence. The address is in Pian Yu Square, where there is a Fushixuan. In the 11th year of Wanli (1583), Xu applied for Jinshi with Tang Xianzu. Tang Xianzu once lived in Fushixuan and created the legend of Peony Pavilion.
Whether Tang Xianzu wrote The Peony Pavilion in Linchuan or Kunshan needs further research by experts and scholars.
