The Four Books and Five Classics are basically Confucian things. I suggest you dabble in philosophers first, and then think about which theory you prefer. Taoism, French, Confucianism, military and Mohism can all be read. From the highest classics, Taoism read Laozi, Legalists read Han Feizi, Confucian reading of the analects of confucius, military strategists read the Art of War, and Mohism read Mozi.
Modern scholars can't finish reading books and don't guarantee classics. Some of nan huaijin's books can be read, while others are of little significance.
You can find some books of a more "guiding" nature, such as directly reading Historical Records, A Hundred Schools of Thought, which is quite good.
