Sima Qian said in Historical Records that both Su Qin and Zhang Yi had studied vertical and horizontal techniques from Mr. Gui Gu. According to legend, Taoist Mao Meng and military strategists Sun Bin and Pang Juan were also students of Guiguzi. Legend has it that anyone who lives in the ghost valley and can be called a "son" has several knowledge: "March and deploy, scatter beans as soldiers;" Speak freely, argue according to reason, and there is nothing to do; Take a look at the past and say nothing; Cultivate one's morality and prolong life. "Of course, this may be a false request of future generations. However, it can be seen that the theory of Guigu that people are talking about now does not belong to the book of Mr. Guigu and Guiguzi.
As for Guiguzi, it first appeared in the Annals of Sui Shu Classics, among which two old titles, Zhuanwan and Faluo, were lost, but now what we see is that later generations collated and supplemented them according to relevant historical materials. Among them, Yan Fu, Bao Shu, Zhongjing, Ben Jing and Yin Fu obviously belong to later generations. There are four annotated versions of Guiguzi, namely Tao Hongjing, Huangfu Mi, Le Yi and Yin Zhiju. Its main editions are collected Taoist scriptures in the Ming Dynasty, Quanshu of Si Ku in Qing Dynasty, Jiangdu Qin Publication in the fifty-third year of Qianlong and Jiangdu Qin Publication in the tenth year of Jiaqing, but all of them originated from collected Taoist scriptures.
Scholars in past dynasties have different opinions on Guiguzi, either praising or disparaging it. Gao Song Sun Xiang said: "His ingenuity, his numerology, his changes and his rhetoric have always been outstanding in the Warring States Period." Lian said, "The words of Ghost Valley are the wisdom of snakes and rats. If used at home, you will die at home; If you are in the country, you will be angry; If you use it in the world, you will lose the world. " No matter what is right or wrong here, we can see that it is indeed a wonderful book only from the comments made by scholars from all walks of life.
