Why is the ancient official seal square, while the modern official seal is mostly round?

This is mainly due to the influence of the West and the interruption of modern China tradition.

/kloc-since the middle of the 0/9th century, with the development of western industry and commerce, the traditional wax seals and sealing rings have not met the daily needs, so a round seal with a handle made of metal or rubber appeared, which was dipped in ink to cover the documents. Because the official seal of western countries usually contains emblem besides words, the seal layout is centered on the emblem, and the words are divided into two rows from left to right around the emblem, so its seal is round. The circular layout structure of western seals has influenced most countries in the world today.

In the first half of 1950s, the seals used by organs at all levels and local governments of the new regime were square seals, but after 1955, they were changed to circular seals. 1955, the State Council issued the "Regulations of People's Republic of China (PRC) and the State Council on the Seal of State Organs", which stipulated that the official seal of state organs should be circular, with the national emblem at the center of the official seal above the provincial or ministerial level and the five-pointed star at the center of the official seal of other organs, and stipulated the size of seals at all levels. 1955 changed the official seal from a square to a circle, mainly to match the promulgation of the new constitution of 1954, so that the words of the official seal surround the national emblem, party emblem or the five-pointed star, thus forming a more reasonable and beautiful seal composition, which is in line with the "advanced country" like the Soviet Union. Today, in China, there is only one square official seal left, that is, the seal of the president and the seal of the vice president printed on the back of RMB.
