Ephedra is the name of traditional Chinese medicine, which is recorded in Shennong Herbal Classic. It is the dried root and rhizome of Ephedra sinica, Ephedra intermedia or Casuarina equisetifolia. Digging in late autumn, removing residual stems, fibrous roots and silt, and drying. It was first seen in Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica, and it was named after "overgrown with weeds and yellow color".
Ephedra belongs to pungent-warming and exterior-relieving drugs. Pungent, slightly bitter, warm in nature; Return to lung meridian and bladder meridian. It has the effects of sweating, dispelling cold, dispersing lung qi, relieving asthma, inducing diuresis and reducing swelling, and can be used for treating common cold due to wind-cold, chest distress, asthma, cough and edema due to geomantic omen. Honey ephedra moistens lung and relieves cough. It is mostly used for relieving exterior syndrome, relieving asthma and relieving cough. Small dose can increase myocardial contractility, improve stress and accelerate conduction, while large dose can inhibit the heart.
