They like the texture of books in their hands, the rustling sound when turning pages, and the unique temperament of each book.
A beautifully bound physical book can not only help you learn knowledge effectively, but also provide an aesthetic life experience, so that you can love reading from now on.
But for various reasons, not all physical books can achieve this reading effect. Buying bad books will directly affect your reading interest and knowledge acquisition.
So if we can master some skills when buying books, it will be very meaningful for our future reading experience and collection.
When people buy books, they generally know to choose a better publishing house.
For example, when buying literary books, people's literature publishing house, Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House and Yuelu Bookstore are generally selected. Others, such as buying science, are those science and engineering university press or machinery industry press.
These are generally not problems. Today, I will focus on book binding. Maybe we will all encounter it, but we didn't pay attention to it, which led to some shortcomings in our book buying career.
First of all, the binding of books is like a person's clothes. If a person is unkempt and ragged, even if he is brilliant, not many people are willing to communicate with him.
So do books. A beautifully bound book can make people feel happy before reading it. Every time you touch this book, it is a wonderful encounter.
The so-called binding, to put it bluntly, is what the book looks like. It is what you see visually about the layout, cover, layout, illustrations, materials used and binding forms of books.
When we buy books, it is impossible and unnecessary to refer to all the binding categories. In that case, buying books becomes a chore.
We only need to master a few key points, and we can basically be handy when buying books.
A folio is how many pages a fully opened paper is divided into. For example, the most common 32-page format of our book is to fold a completely open paper in half and divide it into 32 parts. If it is 16, it is divided into 16.
We just need to know that normal books are 32 folio, and the more copies, the bigger the numbers and the smaller the paper, and vice versa.
To understand the size of 32 open paper, we must first understand the size of full open paper. This involves international size and domestic size:
According to international standards, the size of (889× 1 194) mm is called wide paper, also known as Class A paper.
Domestic standards call the size of (787× 1092) mm positive paper, also known as B-grade paper.
At present, in addition to the above two formats, there are two common formats: (850× 1 168) mm and (880×1230) mm.
In other words, books of the same format have at least four common sizes. It is also a 32-folio book. If the size of the folio is different, then the size of the book is different.
Take the Romance of the Gods by People's Publishing House and the Secretary of the Reading Farm Hall by Baihua Literature and Art Publishing House as examples:
Both books are 32-page volumes, but the folio size of Reading the Secretary of the Peasant Hall is 787× 1092 mm, while the folio size of Romance of the Gods is 880×1230 mm.
Therefore, the scale of Gengtang Reading Club is obviously small. The size of Romance of the Gods is a common folio size.
Generally, behind the title page of each book, there is such a size mark, as shown in the figure:
Knowing the format size and format size, we can find out the inside page size of the book through the table:
By looking up the table, the above two books know that the size of the inner page of Reading the Secretary in the Peasant Auditorium is130×185 mm; The size of the inner page of the Romance of the Gods is 145× 209mm.
The reason why it is the inside page size is that the cover size of books is often designed to be slightly larger than the inside page. As for the cover, we'll talk about it later.
Knowing the size of the book, when we buy books, especially online shopping, it is easy to know the size of the book we bought, which is not convenient for reading.
If you buy calligraphy and painting books and accidentally buy 32-format books, the fonts and patterns will shrink, which is extremely inconvenient for learning and reading.
If you want to buy the same kind of books as a collection, but not limited to the same publishing house, then choosing the same size will undoubtedly make the placement of books more aesthetic.
Knowing the benefits of folio will naturally be realized in the process of buying books in the future, so I won't go into details here.
Mainly divided into hardcover and paperback.
Hardcover is the so-called hard hardcover, that is, hard cover and back cover are used, and the spine of the book is curved, usually with thread binding.
Paperback is the so-called soft book, with a single layer of paper as the cover, the spine at right angles, and generally bound with glue.
Soft-bound books with no more than 300 pages are really comfortable to hold in your hand, but other than that, they all seem to be shortcomings compared with hard-bound books.
First of all, coated paper, as the cover of soft books, has a smooth and delicate surface, but once it has creases, it is fatal and can never be recovered.
If you have a high demand for the appearance of the book cover, or even a slight obsessive-compulsive disorder (it is said that people who love books will have a little), then a crease is enough to drive you crazy. Irritating, this kind of crease is hard to avoid when reading or taking a book.
Hard hardcover books, because the cover is mostly cardboard or wood, are difficult to deform without great strength, and because of the hard texture, they also play a very good role in protecting the inner pages.
So people who often buy second-hand books have the best experience. Generally, the well-preserved books are mostly hardcover old books. The complete works of some famous artists, or important classics, are generally hardcover.
Secondly, because soft books are glued together, it is almost impossible to spread the books flat. If you read more than 500 pages of soft books, it looks really difficult. Even if you put it on the table, you need to hold it with one hand, because the elasticity of glue will close the book at any time. If you press it hard, the glue will break and the book will split in half.
Hardcover books will not have this problem. Thread-bound books can be read naturally on the table, holding a cone in one hand and brushing WeChat in the other.
Finally, soft books are indeed the weakness of their preservation. After years of thermal expansion and cold contraction, this kind of glue will age and become brittle and often break off. Therefore, when we buy used books, it is always right to choose the hardcover edition as far as possible.
I bought a book and recorded Song's words and deeds. I have only read it for decades. When I bought it back, the inside pages became pieces and I couldn't stand it at all. Later, I took it to the printing company to re-bind it before I could understand it.
Therefore, it is better to choose the hardcover version as far as possible to buy books, which is convenient for reading and conducive to long-term collection.
About paper types
In fact, the paper used in ordinary genuine books is not bad now Here I emphasize two experiences:
First, about coated paper, many picture books we see, or color pages in general books, are basically coated paper.
Because coated paper is made of white pigment, adhesive and auxiliary additives. So it has a fatal weakness, that is, it is not resistant to moisture, and it is easy to deform and wrinkle when the humidity is high. Also, due to the addition of many additives, if the material is not good, it will have a pungent taste, which is definitely not good for the body. Pay more attention when buying.
Second, there is a trick about how to distinguish pirated books. Although pirated books are almost genuine in printing, it is still easy to find their defects.
First of all, it can be seen from the paper that the price of pirated books is relatively low (which is also a feature of pirated books). Considering the cost, its paper cannot be too good. Generally, paper is rough, and it feels rough by hand.
There is also the text printing on the inner page, which is either too thick or too shallow, especially the illustrations on the inner page, where the thick parts are almost connected together and can't be seen clearly; Shallow places are almost too shallow to see.
Finally, the typesetting is uneven. So you can tell that it is a pirated book without looking at the content.
About printing quantity
Generally, the back cover of a book will be marked with the author, publishing unit, pricing and some basic information of the book. In addition to the format mentioned above, the print run is also a reference to identify the quality of this book.
If the printing volume is less than 5000 copies, there are cases where the books are a little tall and not suitable for the reading level of the public;
On the other hand, we should consider whether the author's level is too poor.
The article is a bit long, thanks for reading. I hope the above experience about buying books can help you a little.
Regarding the skills of buying books, I think everyone will have some unique experiences. Welcome to exchange and make progress!
