Dongguan Keyuan among the Four Gardens in Lingnan

Dongguan Keyuan, located in Bosha, Dongguan, was praised by its predecessors as "a blessed place on earth, boasting the fairy palace in the garden". Built in the 30th year of Qing Daoguang (A.D. 1850), Guan Ren Zhang. This man donated an official who went to Guangxi for inspection. Later, he was dismissed from office and returned to his hometown, so he built Keyuan, which was completed three years later.

The earliest predecessor of Keyuan was Mao's former residence, but unfortunately it is not recorded now because of its long history. In A.D. 1850, Zhang, the military commander of the Qing Dynasty, completed the construction of Keyuan. After the garden was repaired, Zhang invited celebrities from all walks of life to join in the fun. After dinner, Zhang showed everyone around the house and made comments. Zhang asked everyone's opinion. I don't know if the people who came were too low-level to say anything, or if they were afraid that it would make Zhang angry, they didn't dare to talk indiscriminately. They just nodded and said "Yes, Yes", so Zhang named the garden "Keyuan", but the word also contained the meaning of "Yi, Yi". Keyuan covers an area of about 2200 square meters, and its outer edge is triangular. There are the first floor, six pavilions, five pavilions, six units, five pools, three bridges, nineteen halls and fifteen rooms in the park. Most of its names are named after the word "Kelou", such as Kelou, Kexuan, Tangke and Zhou Ke, as well as Caotang, Hong Ting, Shuangqing Room and Flowers. Its building is a unified water mill blue brick structure. The tallest building is the passenger building, with a height of 15.6 meters. Along the stone steps of the building, you can reach the attractive stone pavilion on the roof, with windows on all sides and cornices, from which you can overlook the scenery of Guancheng.

Keyuan uses the art of gardening in the south of the Yangtze River to create a set of architectural systems with rich levels, scattered patterns, rhythmic colors and contrasting spaces, which are small and bright, high and low, and full of interest. The real fame of Keyuan may not lie in the luxury of architecture, but in its position in the history of modern painting and calligraphy. The garden advocates that although Jing Xiu is a military commander, he is proficient in epigraphy, calligraphy, piano, chess, calligraphy and painting, and poetry. During his retirement, he invited artists Ju Chao and Ju Lian to paint here for many years, and bought a large number of exotic flowers and plants, melons and fruits to sketch. The famille rose and ink painting in Syuren during the Juchao period had a great influence on the emergence and development of Lingnan painting school in the later period.

Lingnan School of Painting has exerted a wide influence in the history of modern art in China, and has been supported and affirmed by progressives, mainly because it represents the advanced artistic trend of thought in the historical period when the old and the new alternate. It advocates a new scientific viewpoint to transform the traditional and stagnant old Chinese painting. It advocates breaking stereotypes, boldly absorbing foreign nutrients and reviving Chinese painting with a thousand-year tradition. It emphasizes that this new Chinese painting is not to express itself but only to satisfy personal intoxication and appreciation, nor to serve a few people narrowly, but to make more people accept it, that is, to pursue a popular, refined and popular art for the needs of the times.
