In ancient China, from emperors to generals to ordinary people, there was an inexplicable admiration for geomantic metaphysics. Emperors, in particular, were fascinated by Feng Shui, especially during the Qing Dynasty. In the eyes of Qing rulers, the most sacred place is Changbai Mountain. I believe many people have heard of the word "Manchu entering the customs", and the surrounding area of Changbai Mountain outside the customs is where Manchu people live.
In the eyes of Manchu people, Changbai Mountain is the birthplace of the Qing Dynasty and the so-called "land of Longxing". Because the Qing dynasty originated from here, gradually developed and expanded, annexed the Central Plains, and then took the whole world into its own hands. Therefore, in order to ensure the stability of the Qing dynasty's inheritance, the first order of the Qing rulers was to impose a "border closure order" on the Changbai Mountain area, and at the same time ordered that anyone in the customs be prohibited from going to the Changbai Mountain area for reclamation and planting.
According to historical records, this "forbidden" policy in Qing Dynasty began at 1644 and ended at 1860. It can be seen that Changbai Mountain was banned by the Qing Dynasty for 224 years. So why did the Qing rulers issue such a ban policy? In fact, it also learned the historical experience of the previous dynasty. As we all know, when Zhu Yuanzhang established the Ming Dynasty, he went straight to the Yuan Dynasty and captured the capital. But at this time, Yuan Shundi was no longer in the capital, but returned to the homeland of the Yuan Dynasty with his staff, that is, the Mongolian grassland. Therefore, when evaluating the demise of the Yuan Dynasty, many people always say that it was not Zhu Yuanzhang who destroyed the Yuan Dynasty, but Yuan Shundi himself who gave up the hinterland of the Central Plains.
After the Manchu established the Great Qing Dynasty, Changbai Mountain was regarded as a "holy land". In order not to let others defile the sacred place in their hearts, they chose to ban it and prohibit any outsiders from entering this place. However, according to some data, after the Qing dynasty entered the customs, the area outside the customs became very empty, so the Li people who suffered from war or famine in the customs hoped to find a way out. Although there was a "ban" on the surface when the emperor shunzhi was in office, he acquiesced in this phenomenon.
