The institutional setup of Dalian Library

Reading?Room?

Dalian Library is one of the first batch of key units for the protection of ancient books announced by the State Council. Over the past 100 years, the museum has collected 550,000 precious ancient books, especially novels of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, materials of the Manchu-Qing Railway, archives of the Qing Dynasty's internal affairs office, rubbings of inscriptions, maps and local chronicles, which are well-known at home and abroad. However, due to the long historical reasons, these precious books and documents have been seriously damaged, such as mildew and decay, rat bites, water immersion, acidification and deterioration of paper, serious shortage of repairers and the environment for the protection and scientific research of ancient books, which is far from the advanced level in the world, making it impossible to read and use the ancient books in its collection. In order to protect ancient books and inherit the ancient wisdom of the Chinese nation, in 2005, under the vigorous promotion of curator Mr. Zhang, a center for the restoration of ancient books was established with certain financial, material and human resources. The existing studio area of the center is 500 square meters, and the working environment is second to none in China. All 8 restorers have bachelor degree or above and received professional training. The center adheres to the restoration concept of "protection first, rescue first, minimum intervention and reversible process". Through various restoration techniques such as "gold inlaid jade", "single and double lining paper" and "acid removal", a large number of ancient books and documents have been restored and rescued. In 2007 alone, more than 50 kinds of ancient books, 100 volumes and 600 rubbings of various inscriptions were restored. Remarkable achievements.
