Did Li Zicheng become a monk or was he killed? What are the records?

Li Zicheng is known as King Chuang in history. During the Ming Dynasty, he invaded the capital and led to the fall of the Ming Dynasty. He also became the emperor for 42 days, but he was soon driven out. , fled in panic. There is a lot of controversy about Li Zicheng's subsequent ending, but the most widely circulated theory is that Li Zicheng was later killed by some villagers in the countryside. At that time, these villagers did not know Li Zicheng and thought that Li Zicheng was a bandit, so they hit Li Zicheng with a hoe. However, there are also some rumors that Li Zicheng has become a monk.

Li Zicheng was a very great leader at the end of the Ming Dynasty. He led the peasant uprising and fought in the north and south throughout his life. He went through many ups and downs and fought for 14 years. He overthrew the Min Dynasty and forced Emperor Chongzhen to hang himself. In fact, if Li Zicheng became emperor properly at this time, he would be considered a complete victory in running the country. However, after Li Zicheng defeated the Ming Dynasty, there were still people watching behind him, namely the Qing Dynasty, so Li Zicheng still could not secure the throne.

After Li Zicheng successfully broke into the capital, in April of the same year, Dorgon and Wu Sangui led their troops together to gather for a battle with Li Zicheng outside Shanhaiguan. After Li Zicheng was defeated, he withdrew from the capital and led his own army. The army was engaged in the war of resistance in places like Henan and Shaanxi. In 1645, Li Zicheng went to the Jiugong Mountain in Tongcheng to worship at the temple. However, when he knelt down to worship, a villager hit the vital part of his head with a hoe from behind and died.

However, there is another theory that Li Zicheng went to Jiugong Mountain in Hubei and wanted to survey the terrain for the army, so he took more than 20 knights to the mountain with him, and met some villagers. The villagers thought that Li Zicheng and others were bandits, so they stoned the officers and soldiers around Li Zicheng to death. When Li Zicheng was fighting with some villagers, he was hit in the head with a shovel and killed. So it can be seen that the possibility of Li Zicheng being killed in the later ending is relatively high.
