The historical origin of Penang Mountain;
Captain Francis Wright, the founder of Penang Mountain Colony, first drew a clue from the waterfall of Penang Botanical Garden to the top of the mountain in 1788. In order to grow strawberries, he reclaimed an area, so this area is called Strawberry Mountain. Its official name is Flagstaff Mountain, which is still reflected in the Malay name Bukit Bendera (literally "Staff Mountain in flug"). This name refers to the flagpole outside Bell Retiro, which was built by Francis Wright in 1789.
Widely known as Penang Mountain, this area has become a cool refuge for British colonists from the threat of low-lying heat and malaria. Many bungalows have been built on the top of Penang for government officials and troops.
