Mount Emei is a sacred place for Taoism and Buddhism.
1. Taoism
The Taoist culture in Mount Emei has a long history, dating back to the late Eastern Han Dynasty. At that time, Zhang Daoling founded the "Five Pecks of Rice Tao" here, which is the Tianshi Tao, and Mount Emei became an important holy place for Taoism. The grand occasion of Taoism all over the mountain once attracted countless believers to come and worship. The most famous one is that Du Guangting of the Tang Dynasty listed Mount Emei as one of the "Thirty-six Small Cave Heavens" in the "Preface to the Records of Yuedu Famous Mountains in Cave Heaven and Blessed Land". It is called "Lingling Taimiao Cave".
2. Buddhism
As time goes by, the religious belief in Mount Emei gradually changes from Taoism to Buddhism. This is probably due to the influence of emperors in the past dynasties who "suppressed Taoism and promoted Buddhism" or "destroyed Buddhism and worshiped Taoism." Buddhism prospered day by day while Taoism gradually declined. At the same time, Mount Emei was once the dojo of Samantabhadra, a Bodhisattva who symbolizes reason and action in Buddhism. His dojo naturally attracted a large number of Buddhist believers. In the end, all the palaces in the mountain were converted into temples, with Samantabhadra being the only one honored.
