Wang Wei
Wang Wei (701-761), courtesy name Mojie, was a famous poet in the prosperous Tang Dynasty. He was an official and minister of Youcheng. He was originally from Qi (now Qi County, Shanxi Province). He moved to Puzhou (now Yongji, Shanxi), believed in Buddhism, and lived in Wangchuan Villa in Lantian in his later years. He is good at painting figures, bamboos, and landscapes. People in the Tang Dynasty recorded two types of landscape features: one is similar to that of Li and his son, and the other is painted with broken ink. His famous work "Wangchuan Picture" is the latter. Unfortunately, no authentic work has been handed down to this day. The "Snowy Stream Picture" and "Jinan Fu Sheng Statue" that are said to be his are not authentic.
Wang Wei was rich in literary talent when he was a teenager. In the ninth year of Kaiyuan (721), he was awarded the rank of Jinshi and became Lecheng. For some reason, he was relegated to Sicang, Jeju to join the army. Later he returned to Chang'an. In the 22nd year of Kaiyuan, Zhang Jiuling was appointed Zhongshu Ling. Wang Wei was promoted to the position of Youshiyi. At that time, he wrote the poem "Xian Shi Xing Gong", which praised Zhang Jiuling's political ideas of opposing party establishment for personal gain and excessive use of honorary rewards, which reflected his mood at that time to demand something to be done. In the twenty-fourth year (736), Zhang Jiuling resigned as prime minister. The following year he was demoted to the governor of Jing. Li Linfu was appointed Zhongshu Ling, which was a turning point in the politics of the Xuanzong period from being relatively clear to becoming increasingly dark. Wang Wei was very frustrated by Zhang Jiuling's demotion, but he did not withdraw from officialdom. In the twenty-fifth year of Kaiyuan, he was envoyed to Hexi Province to serve as deputy ambassador Cui Xiyi. Later, he was appointed as the imperial censor Zhi Nanxuan. In Tianbaozhong, Wang Wei's official position was gradually promoted. Before the Anshi Rebellion, when officials were in trouble, he was tired and worried about the officialdom at that time, but on the other hand, he was still attached to his family and could not leave decisively. So he followed the customs and lived a semi-official and semi-hidden life for a long time.
He originally believed in Buddhism, but as his thoughts became increasingly negative, his Buddhist beliefs also developed. When he was young, he lived in the mountains and forests. After his middle age, he once lived in Zhongnan Mountain. Later, he got a separate business in Lantian and Wangchuan in Song Dynasty, so he and his friend Pei Diyou traveled there and wrote poems to entertain each other. In the fifteenth year of Tianbao (756), Anshi's rebel army fell into Chang'an, Xuanzong entered Shu, and Wang Wei was captured by the rebels. After taking medicine and pretending to be ill, he was still sent to Luoyang and assigned to a pseudo-official position. After the two capitals were recovered, those who received false posts were sentenced in different grades. He was praised by Su Zong for his poem "Ningbi Pond" in memory of the Tang Dynasty. Moreover, his brother Wang Jin had already reached a high official position and asked to be demoted to atone for his sins, so he was only demoted. He was appointed Prince Zhongyun, and later moved to Gishizhong after Fu Lei, and eventually became Minister Youcheng.
Wang Wei’s poems are less than 400 in existence. Among them, the most representative of his creative features are poems depicting natural scenery such as mountains, rivers and pastoral areas, and singing about hermit life. Wang Wei's high achievements in depicting natural scenery made him unique in the poetry circle of the prosperous Tang Dynasty and became a representative figure of the landscape pastoral poetry school. He inherited and developed the tradition of writing landscape poetry initiated by Xie Lingyun, and also absorbed the freshness and nature of Tao Yuanming's pastoral poetry, which brought the achievement of landscape pastoral poetry to a peak and thus occupied an important position in the history of Chinese poetry. "Old Book of Tang·Biography of Wang Wei" states that during the reign of Emperor Daizong, Wang Jin compiled more than 400 poems by Wang Wei. Wang Jin's "Jin Wang Youcheng Ji Biao" also compiled 10 volumes of Wang Wei's poetry and prose. Shugutang originally had 10 volumes of the Southern Song Dynasty's Ma Sha version of "Collected Works of Wang Youcheng", which were later returned to Lu Xinyuan's Songlou. The Beijing Library has 10 volumes of the Song and Shu editions of "Collected Works of Wang Mojie", which were photocopied and published by Shanghai Ancient Books Publishing House in 1982. In the Yuan Dynasty, Liu Xuxi commented on "The Collection of Wang Youcheng" (Collected Poems) in 6 volumes, and the "Sibu Congkan" was copied based on it, which included works by Qian Qi, Lu Xiang, Cui Xingzong and others. Gu Qijing of the Ming Dynasty has 10 volumes of "Collected Poems of Tang Dynasty King Youcheng" with 10 volumes and 4 volumes of attached essays. This is the earliest existing annotated version of Wang Wei's poems. "Wang Youcheng's Collection of Notes" by Zhao Diancheng of the Qing Dynasty is by far the better annotated version. In addition to explanatory notes on all the poems, it also includes comments, explanations of the poems whose authors are doubtful, and occasional textual research. It also collects information about Wang Wei's life and poetry and painting criticism as an appendix. In 1961, the Shanghai Editorial Office of Zhonghua Book Company revised and revised Zhao's annotated version, typed and published it. In addition, Zheng Zhenduo once used the "Sibu Congkan" as the base, revised it with Zhao Diancheng's annotated version and other four editions, and included it in the "World Library". Deeds can be seen in the new and old "Tang Shu" biography. Both the Gu Qijing annotated version and the Zhao Diancheng annotated version are accompanied by Wang Wei's chronology written by the annotator. Today's Chen Yi has an article "A Preliminary Study of Wang Wei's Life and Deeds", followed by a "Brief Chronology of Wang Wei" (contained in "Tang Poetry Series").
Most of Wang Wei's landscape and pastoral works not only depict the natural beauty, but also reveal the leisurely and leisurely taste of leisurely life. Poets especially like to express a quiet and tranquil state. Some works are desolate or lonely, expressing the thoughts and emotions of being indifferent to reality and even the desolation of Zen. Wang Wei became increasingly depressed after middle age and sought sustenance in Buddhism and mountains and rivers. He claimed that "as soon as he realizes silence, he will be happy and have more leisure in this life" ("The Busan Monk"). This mood is fully reflected in his poetry creation. In the past, many people praised Wang Wei's poems, not only because of their high artistic skills, but also because they were attracted by the leisurely mood and negative thoughts reflected in them. In the Ming Dynasty, Hu Yinglin said that Wang Wei's five masterpieces "have entered Zen Buddhism", and also said that the two poems "Niaosong Stream" and "Xinyiwu", "I have forgotten my life experience after reading it, and all my thoughts are silent" (Shisou), which is a clear proof. . The Story of Snow Scene was written by Wang Wei. Wang Wei's other works with themes, such as farewells and journeys, often contain beautiful lines about scenery, such as "The trees in the distance lead travelers, and the solitary city is illuminated by the sun" ("Send off to Qi, don't let it fall and return"). "Hometown"), "Half of the rain in the mountains, hundreds of springs under the trees" ("Farewell to Zizhou Li Shijun"), "The rivers and lakes are white at sunset, and the sky and earth are green when the tide comes" ("Farewell to Xingguizhou"), "The solitary smoke in the desert is straight, the long river falls "Japanese yen" ("Envoy to the Fortress") and so on are all famous sayings that have been passed down forever.
Su Shi once said: "When you taste the poems of Mojie, there are paintings in the poems; when you look at the paintings of Mojie, there are poems in the paintings." ("Dongpo Inscription and Postscript·Book Mojie Lantian Misty Rain Picture") Wang Wei Not only does he have excellent literary talents, he is also an excellent painter and is also good at music. His profound artistic accomplishment, his love for nature and his long-term experience of living in mountains and forests have given him a keen, unique and meticulous feeling for the beauty of nature. Therefore, the landscapes and scenery he writes are particularly full of charm, and they are often briefly exaggerated to show the profound and far-reaching effect. The artistic conception is intriguing. His poems are very picturesque in their scenery, with bright and beautiful colors, and a combination of dynamic and still scenes. He is especially good at expressing the changes in light, color and sound in nature in detail. For example, "Amidst the noisy rocks, the color is quiet deep in the pines" ("Green Creek"), "The sound of springs swallows dangerous rocks, and the sun is cold and green pines" ("Passing Xiangji Temple"), as well as "Birds Singing Stream", "Deer Chai" Poems such as "Mulan Chai" and "Mulan Chai" are all written with subtle details. Wang Wei's landscape poems often use the form of five rhymes and five uniques. They are short in length, exquisite in language, and have relatively soothing syllables. They are especially suitable for expressing quiet landscapes and the poet's peaceful mood. Wang Wei's high achievements in depicting natural scenery made him unique in the poetry world of the prosperous Tang Dynasty and became a representative figure of the landscape pastoral poetry school. Illustrations from Wang Wei's poem "Remembering the Shandong Brothers on September 9th" are selected from the Guangxu engraving of "Drawings of Famous Masters" in the Qing Dynasty
Wang Wei also wrote many outstanding poems in other aspects. "March to the Army", "Journey to Longxi", "Travel to Yan Branch", "Watching Hunting", "Envoy to the Fortress", "Leaving the Fortress", etc., which are based on military life and frontier fortress life, are all magnificent and dynamic works. "Longtou Yin" and "Old General's Journey" express the sorrow of generals who have not been rewarded for their merits, reflecting one aspect of the internal contradictions of the feudal ruling class. "Song of Yimen" sings the chivalrous spirit of historical figures. The four poems of "Youth's Journey" express the hero's bravery and boldness, with vivid images and smooth writing. These works are generally believed to be Wang Wei's early works. There are also some poems, such as "Ode to the Four Sages of Ji", "Fable", "Ode to Unexpected Encounters", and "Ode to Lady Zhao Playing the Harp" written when he was demoted to Jeju. Expressing indignation at the unreasonable phenomenon of talented people being unlucky reflects some of the dark sides of feudal politics in the Kaiyuan and Tianbao periods. "A Daughter's Journey to Luoyang" and "Ode to Xi Shi" use bixing techniques to express the emotion arising from the injustice between the high and the low and the satire of the powerful. There are also works such as "Mrs. Xi" and "Ban Jieyu" that describe women's pain. They are deeply sad and have certain social significance. Some lyrical poems are given to relatives and friends and describe daily life, such as "Farewell", "Farewell to each other in the mountains", "Farewell to Li's Supplements at Lingaotai", "Farewell to the Second Envoy of the Yuan Dynasty in Anxi", "Farewell to Shen Zifu Returning to Jiangdong", "September 9th" "Reminiscent of Shandong Brothers", "Lovesickness", "Miscellaneous Poems", "You Came from Hometown", etc. have been recited by people for thousands of years; "Send Yuan Er Envoy to Anxi", "Lovesickness", etc. were immediately broadcast as music at that time and were widely known. Sing. These small poems are all five-character or seven-character quatrains, with sincere emotions, clear and natural language, no need for decoration, and a simple and profound beauty. They are comparable to the quatrains of Li Bai and Wang Changling, and represent the highest achievement of quatrains in the prosperous Tang Dynasty. Portrait of Wang Wei, selected from "Thirty-six Immortals of Poetry"
The least desirable things in Wang Wei's collection are those eulogizing poems, flattering singing poems and works that directly promote Buddhism. Their content is often trivial, and their language is cliche or boring. But there are also a few famous poems and lines in it, such as "The Imperial City of Yunli has two wind towers, and thousands of homes are planted with spring trees in the rain." The atmosphere is magnificent and the objects are delicate, which is also praised by people. Illustrations of Wang Wei's poem "Youth Journey" are selected from the Ming Dynasty Wanli Jiyazhai engraving of "Tang Poems in Seven Characters and Painting Manual"
Wang Wei's creative talents are multi-faceted. He has the highest attainments in Wulu and Wu and Qiyan, and he is also good at other genres. This is quite outstanding in the entire Tang Dynasty poetry circle. His Qilu are either majestic and gorgeous, or pure and elegant, and were imitated by the Seventh Son of the Ming Dynasty. The seven ancient poems "A Journey to Taoyuan", "The Journey of an Old General", "Tong Cui Fu's Reply to a Wise Brother", etc., are neat in form and flowing in momentum, and can be regarded as the best among the seven ancient poems in the prosperous Tang Dynasty. There are also excellent works of prose. "The Book of Di Shu with Pei Xiucai in the Mountains" is quiet and meaningful, very poetic and picturesque, and is similar to the style of its landscape poetry.
Wang Wei's poems enjoyed great fame both during his lifetime and in later generations. History says that "his reputation flourished among Kaiyuan and Tianbao. Heroes and nobles greeted him from the left, and kings Ning and Xue treated him like mentors and friends" (the original biography of "New Book of Tang"). Emperor Daizong of the Tang Dynasty once praised him as the "Tianwen Zong" ("Reply to Wang Jinjin and Wang Wei's Collection of Imperial Edicts"). Du Fu also called him "the most beautiful line in the world" (eight of the twelve poems in "Relief from Boredom"). Yin □ said: "Wei's poems are beautiful and elegant, with new and comfortable meanings. They are pearls in the spring and painted on the wall. Every sentence and every word is out of the ordinary." ("Heyue Yingling Collection") Sikong Tu in the late Tang Dynasty praised it. Its "interest is clear, as clear as clear" ("Reviewing Poems and Books with Wang Jia"). In the past, Wang Wei was praised as the "Buddha of Poetry", and was mentioned together with the "Sage of Poetry" Du Fu and the "Immortal of Poetry" Li Bai. In terms of ideological content, Wang Wei's poetry is far from being compared with Li and Du; but in terms of art, Wang Wei does have his unique achievements and contributions. The poems of Liu Changqing of the Tang Dynasty, the Ten Talents of Dali, and even Yao He, Jia Dao and others were all influenced by Wang Wei to varying degrees. Until the Qing Dynasty, Wang Shi □ praised Shen Yun, and actually regarded his poetry as a cult. But this school of poetry often expresses sentimental scenery and lacks social content.
