Discussion on dot painting and structure of official script
Yang Xiaojun
Beginners to official script often do not understand the relationship between official script, seal script and regular script. I have a deep impression of regular script fonts, so I often use regular script to enter official scripts, especially at the beginning and turning points. Secondly, because the Han official script inscriptions are old and the stone is weathered, the stipples are incomplete, and the rubbings are not done properly. There is a distinction between rough and fine, so it is difficult for beginners to understand the brushwork method of official calligraphy stipple painting. They often follow the glyphs and make the stipples pretend to be trembling to show their originality. For example, the short horizontal paintings in "Zhang Qian Monument" are very straight, with a steep stroke when the stroke is started, with the hidden front inverted, the head square and rounded, and the stroke is carried to the end, with a slight pause at the beginning and end of the stroke.
The long and horizontal strokes: For example, the horizontal strokes of the characters "Qi" and "Wen" are drawn with heavier strokes. The purpose is to take advantage of the adverse trend and achieve the full effect of the front, and the strokes have twists and turns.
Left strokes: For example, the strokes of the characters "bird" and "Yi" are drawn with the strokes of the pen and the tip of the pen moves in a retrograde direction. When the pen is closed, the strokes are lifted upwards and the strokes are drawn back. Sometimes when writing fast, the strokes are naturally lifted upwards.
Vertical: For example, the vertical paintings of the characters "九" and "龙" are written in the same way as flat paintings. The vertical paintings of official script do not have the sharpness of hanging needles and hanging needles like regular script. It is more natural to start and close the pen, which is inherited from the strokes of seal script.
Nup: For example, the writing method of "bird" and "home" is basically the same as that of wave painting. There is an upward feeling at the beginning. However, it should be noted that over-emphasis on it will make it look unstable.
Hook: For example, the hook drawing of the characters "事" and "有" is the same as the writing method of shu. The only difference is that after drawing vertically, it turns to the left, and then the pen is lifted up and recovered. Beginners often use strokes or strokes to form the shape at the end of the stroke, which looks bloated. This is due to the weakness of the left stroke.
Zip: For example, at the turning point of the characters "龙" and "有", the writing method is to draw flat to the turning point, lift the pen and change the edge, and then press down the line. There should be no bevel or off-shoulder in regular script at the connecting point of the regular script. That is to say, the round turn of the seal script was changed to a square fold, and the writing was divided into two strokes, which speeded up the writing speed. This is the key to why official script writing is faster than seal script.
Point: The writing method of "point" in official script is a condensation of other calligraphy point paintings, such as the point of the word "wen", which is different from the regular script point where the stroke is drawn sideways. For example, the upper left point of the word "Chang" is written with a stroke, and the upper right point is written with a stroke. Generally speaking, the stroke of the stroke should be pointed up and down, and you should pay attention to it when writing.
Zhao Mengfu of the Yuan Dynasty said: "Calligraphy is based on the use of brushes, and the knotting of characters also requires labor. The characters of knotting are passed down from time to time, and the use of brushes is not easy through the ages." This illustrates the relationship between the use of brushes and the formation of characters. To write each word well, in addition to paying attention to the use of pen, you must also arrange the structure reasonably.
