The Life of Characters in Yang Jizong's Works

Yang Jizong, Han nationality, born in Yangcheng, Shanxi. Among the honest officials in the Ming Dynasty, Yang Jizong was the best. He lives in Tianshun (1457- 1464), Chenghua (1465- 1487) and Hongzhi (1488- 1505). The officialdom at that time was not like the early Ming Dynasty. Yang Jizong despises those corrupt officials very much and thinks they are dirty things. When he arrives at any office, he always draws water for a hundred people to welcome him, cleans the hall and then asks political questions, saying that this is to clean up the filth. Although Yang Jizong is only an official, he is a famous official in history books and has become a famous official admired by future generations.

Yang Jizong died in 1488 (Wushen, the first year of Hongzhi). In a calligraphy work, he wrote: "I have been quiet all my life, with few selfish desires and no foreign objects ... I am independent and maintain it, I cultivate it, and I value harmony." ..... My Lord corrected Yang Jizong, the younger brother of the ancestral hall (the ample house hid what he saw and heard in Mo Bao and recorded it). He is a generation of young and honest officials, honest and clean, without eunuchs, which shows that his ambition is clear. It is also known that Yang Jizong was named the Temple to make up for his lack of historical biography.

In the early days of Tianshun, he was admitted to Jinshi and was awarded an official position and director of punishments. Many prisoners died of illness at that time. Yang Jizong improved their diet and ordered a bath every three days, so that many prisoners could continue to survive. Yang Jizong is also good at identifying mysteries. Hejian captured the robbers and sent villager Zhang Wen to escort the capital. On the way, the robbers fled. Zhang Wen said to Li Guo, "We should die together. Your mother is old and lacks brothers, so I will replace the robber, hoping to save your mother and son's life. " Li Guo thanked him in tears and listened to Zhang Wen's arrangement. Zhang Wenshen was shackled and sent to the punishments. Yang Jizong found that he was not a robber, finally found out the situation and let him go.

In the early years of Chenghua, the court adopted Wang Ao's recommendation and promoted Yang Jizong as the magistrate of Jiaxing. Yang Jizong went to his post with only one servant, and the official school was also in Qingpu. He is honest and withdrawn by nature, and people dare not offend him. But he can often summon rural elders, ask them about their sufferings, help them with relief, and vigorously set up sociology. If folk children fail to go to school at the age of eight, their fathers and brothers will be punished. Every time Yang Jizong met a scholar, he was treated as a guest, but Confucian scholars and teachers in the government advised him to study, and culture and education flourished for a while.

Kong Ru, an imperial envoy, came to Jiaxing to clear the army, and many old people in Gree were flogged to death by him. Yang Jizong posted a notice saying, "If someone is killed by the imperial aides, please report his name to the imperial court." Confucius was very angry. Yang Jizong's visit said, "There are certain rules for governing Taoism. All you have to do is get rid of all evils and admonish and punish officials. Door-to-door inspection is a matter for the local government, and (what you do) is not stipulated by law. " Confucius couldn't cope, but he was deeply jealous. Before leaving, he suddenly broke into the office and opened Yang Jizong's box and basket. There were only a few old clothes in it, and he left in shame. Some eunuchs passed through Jiaxing, and Yang Jizong only gave them water chestnuts, gorgons and almanac. When the eunuchs asked for money, Yang Jizong immediately issued a public order to collect the gold and silver in the national treasury, and said, "Here's all the money, please give me a stamp." The eunuch was too scared to accept it. Yang Jizong went to Beijing for pilgrimage, and Wang Zhi wanted to see him, but he was refused. Ming Xianzong asked Wang Zhi, "Who is honest among pilgrims?" Wang Zhi replied: "Only Yang Jizong doesn't love money."

At the end of his nine-year term, Yang Jizong was promoted to judge in Zhejiang Province. He offended eunuch Jasmine Zhang many times, and Jasmine Zhang's younger brother Sharla Cheung served his sentence in Li Si prison, and often vilified Yang Jizong in front of Xianzong. Xianzong said, "Didn't you say Yang Jizong who didn't want a penny?" Sharla Cheung was frightened and wrote to Jasmine Zhang: "Be kind to Yang Jizong, the emperor already knows about him."

Upon learning of the news of his mother's death, Yang Jizong immediately left his post and went to the Sao Pavilion, where he cleaned all the utensils of the official's son and sent them to the official's office, with only a servant and a few books. After the funeral, Yang Jizong ascended the throne as the governor of Yushi and Shuntianfu. There are many fertile farmland in both capitals. Anyone who encroaches on people's property will be brought back to the people immediately. He also checked the pass and got a lot of sorting. When the stars changed, Yang Jizong wanted to write a letter to officials, criticizing eunuchs and civil and military officials for taking bribes and abusing their power, and demanding that eunuchs be recalled from the town, so he was even more hated by dignitaries. Chen Yi committed adultery and accused him of his fault. The powerful people took the opportunity to vilify him, so he was demoted as a deputy envoy of Yunnan.

After Emperor Xiaozong ascended the throne, he appointed Yang Jizong as the judge of Huguang. When he arrived, he had hundreds of bottles of water sent to clean the hall and then deal with the affairs. He said, "I use it to clean up the filth." Soon after he took office, he won the imperial city as the governor of Yunnan. There are many old colleagues in Yunnan's command department, bureaucracy department and provincial justice department, and they are all very happy to meet. After the meeting, he left his seat, bowed to his wife and said, "I have to do business tomorrow." I hope you can give me an understanding. " So he impeached and dismissed eight incompetent people. He died soon after.

Yang Jizong tried his best to maintain discipline and integrity, but he was kind-hearted and had to act according to the ceremony. When you become a magistrate, you must wear royal robes when you meet your boss, and so must you when you visit the official department when you go to Beijing for pilgrimage. Some people say it's unnecessary. Yang Jizong said with a smile: "This is the uniform of the imperial court. Don't wear it at this time, when? " When he was a provincial judge in Zhejiang, more than ten people in charge of the warehouse officials were imprisoned for lack of food, so that they sold their children as compensation. Yang Jizong wanted to be lenient with them, but there was no reason. One day, he sent the monthly salary and silver, weighed it and found that it exceeded the original amount, and the salaries and silver of other officials also exceeded the original amount. So, he realized the reason why the warehouse collectors were short of food, and he was ready to report it truthfully. Everyone was not at ease and asked Yang Jizong to donate the salary solution, not the warehouse clerk to compensate. More than a dozen warehouse officials were released. Yang Jizong once invigilated the countryside and got two good papers. Dressed in royal robes, he once again offered sacrifices to heaven: "These two students must be the best talents in the world. I congratulate the talents of the imperial court. " When I opened the paper, I knew that the second place was Wang Hua and Wen Li. As expected, they won the first prize in succession, which made people admire Yang Jizong's vision. In the early days of revelation, the posthumous title was Su Zhen.
