On the afternoon of August 23, 2004, 91-year-old Du Xuan died of illness in Shanghai Huadong Hospital.
When Comrade Du Xuan was seriously ill, leaders of the Shanghai Municipal Party Committee, Municipal Government, and Municipal Party Committee Propaganda Department of the Communist Party of China visited the hospital many times. On Tai'an Road in Shanghai, Du Xuan's residence before his death, the mourning hall is located in the study room, which is filled with flower baskets sent by all parties. Surrounded by lilies, anthuriums and white roses, there is a portrait of Du Xuan. In the photo, he is smiling very happily. His daughter Gui Weiming told reporters that this photo was taken when Du Xuan and his family went to Ningbo in May 2002. Two years ago, Du Xuan was admitted to the East China Hospital for surgery due to incomplete intestinal obstruction. He has been living in East China Hospital since then. This time, due to complications caused by a lung infection, "he passed away very suddenly." Gui Weiming's eyes suddenly turned red. On August 21 On the same day, the doctor told his family that the old man's condition suddenly deteriorated, and two days later, he left us forever. Gui Weiming said that Du Xuan had explained everything clearly when he was awake. He asked that the funeral be simple but "decent", which was in line with his consistent respect for himself. The reporter learned that even in the hospital, the old man insisted on taking a shower, changing clothes, shaving every day, and facing visitors neatly and freshly. He had been practicing calligraphy in the hospital, and nurses and cleaners often asked him for calligraphy. He welcomes all comers, but many people who want to buy words with money are often rejected by him.
After the age of 85, he continued to create. He wrote one scene each for the plays "Master Hongyi" and "The Legend of Tian Han". However, they were delayed due to illness. He also wrote a small play without scenes, telling the story of two people. A young friend started a "twilight love" story when he was old. The family said that this story was written very calmly and warmly, reflecting the love view of that generation of intellectuals. Du Xuan was an emotional person, and he always missed his teachers and friends deeply. After the play "Kurst" with Tian Han as the protagonist was performed, he always wanted to watch it, but missed the performance because of illness. Finally, he watched the video of the play in the ward and gave a pertinent evaluation; Mr. Ba Jin's 100th birthday, He personally participated in the celebrations and wrote several poems on the spot; in 2003, when the Shanghai Dramatic Art Center rehearsed "Unforgettable Years", he came to the young directors and actors to exchange creative ideas with them. He said: "I write My talents are limited, but I write with deep affection.
"People also responded to this respectable old man with the same deep affection. Before his operation, Yin Yicui, deputy secretary of the Municipal Party Committee, visited him many times. Before and after he entered the operating room, Wang Zhongwei, the Propaganda Minister of the Municipal Party Committee, made several phone calls to inquire. During his hospitalization, many people, including the leaders of this newspaper, visited him. Ba Jin's daughter Li Xiaolin often walked into his ward. In the last week of his life, Li Xiaolin said to him: "I love You, dad. "During his more than two years in the hospital, his family members took turns staying with him 24 hours a day. "Family love extended his life," Gui Weiming said. Du Xuan was very concerned about the literary newspaper he co-founded during his lifetime. In early 2003, He also told the reporter who came to interview him that we are all limited by irresistible natural laws, but "Literature Newspaper" has become an integral part of our country's literary cause. It should be done as a career, not just a job. In 2004, Comrade Du Xuan passed away in Shanghai at the age of 91 due to ineffective treatment.
