However, due to the long creation time of classic inscriptions, most of them are incomplete and defaced, and most of them are spread from epigraphy. Whether it is the beginning, stroke or ending of stippling, or the interspersed combination of structures, it is difficult to express them with a brush. So for beginners, it is often impossible to enter the door.
Sun Boxiang, who is 85 years old, is a master of contemporary stele school, and his Creation of Weibei has a pioneering and enlightening significance in the field of contemporary stele study. He unified the concepts of "knife" and "pen", making each word a visual expression of a highly carved concept. Teacher Sun believes that to learn Wei Bei's calligraphy well, we must first master the writing methods of basic strokes. And explain the writing skills of "horizontal", one of the basic strokes in Wei Bei's calligraphy.
It is not too difficult to master the effect of a pen or a square or a circle. It is more difficult to enter the law first and then casually. What is more difficult is the ups and downs of the long line. Long-distance running should have a fast rhythm and a long-distance winding effect. "The ups and downs of a line are on the peak, and the ups and downs of a point are on the milli-awn." The words of sages broke the skillful use of brushwork. Long-term shortening is a point, and short-term lengthening is a line. Whether it is a point or a line, it has its own vitality and its own language.
For example, in Zhang Menglong's Monument, the horizontal stroke is naturally changeable, and the brushwork is restrained, fluctuating from astringency. Things are blocked, pens are slightly rewarded, and they are exhausted. Its horizontal pen runs through the beginning, line and end with the strength of real connotation, which is obviously different from the horizontal pen in Tang Dynasty. The words Yan and Liu are more common at both ends of the Tang stele, but less in the middle. After receiving the pen, they are more recovered, and there are more solitary pens. The word "Wang" in "Zhang Menglong Monument" has three horizontal lines, up, down and down, and the three horizontal lines are almost equal, forming a square, with solid brushwork and harmonious pitching.
When I was young, I often made a mistake: I paid attention to the periphery and ignored the palace. For example, the middle two strokes of the word "Ming", the middle two strokes of the word "Mu" and the middle two strokes of the word "Yue" should not be rash when writing. The smaller and more precise the strokes, the more serious and powerful they should be. Therefore, whether it is long or short, we must understand it carefully to control the wrist force. Flat drag and stagnation are the taboos of writing long and horizontal.
The predecessors summarized Wei Bei's calligraphy style, Fang Bi, into two sentences: "The horizontal pen is vertical, and the vertical pen is horizontal". The horizontal pen is vertical, which means that the pen leans to the side, and the vertical pen is almost horizontal, then raise the pen and squat down to the upper right (horizontally). For example, when writing horizontally, it is a big mistake to finish the vertical strokes first and then redraw the strokes to the right. The correct spelling is "pen in the air". When the pen falls on the paper, the meaning has been injected into the end of the pen. Pop up (lift) immediately after the pen is put down and then press (stroke) to write it down. The true meaning of this needs to be realized in practice.
