Cai Yong was a famous writer, calligrapher and musician in the Eastern Han Dynasty, and was the father of Cai Wenji, a famous talented woman. Because of his official position as commander-in-chief, he was later called "Cai Zhonglang". Cai Yong was proficient in temperament and brilliant, and studied under the famous politician and scholar Hu Guang.
Once, Cai Yong passed by Wudi and saw someone "scratching" a piece of paulownia wood as firewood and said, "Don't burn it, don't burn it, it's a rare good material for making a piano!" Cai Yong bought it and made it into a piano, which can play "Ding Ding Dong Dong" music. Because its tail is burnt, people call it "Wei Jiaoqin".

Cai Yong is good at seal script and official script, but he is not good at literary works such as General Classics and General History, Ci and Fu. Li Shu, in particular, has the deepest attainments and the highest reputation, and has the evaluation of "Cai Yong's book is full of vigor and vitality".

Cai Yong initially refused to be drafted, but was later conquered by Situ Qiaoxuan, and he became the director of the river. Recruited as a doctor and participated in the sequel of Dongguan Hanji. Moved to negotiate with Lang and participated in the engraving of Xiping stone classics. Being outspoken, he was framed by eunuchs and exiled to Shuofang. After many twists and turns, he took refuge in Jiangnan for twelve years.
Dong Zhuo came to power and summoned Cai Yong. Cai Yong was forced to go and was appointed as a drink offering by the Department, which was highly valued by Dong Zhuo. He was promoted to the highest position, and within three days, he served as a counselor, scholar and history book. He became the magistrate of Ba County and stayed as a servant. After worshipping Zuo as a corps commander, he moved to Chang 'an, the capital, and sealed Gaoyang Township.
After Dong Zhuo was killed, Cai Yong was imprisoned for sighing in Wang Yun's seat, and soon died in prison at the age of 60.
