You can get a glimpse of it by looking at the content arrangement of Mr. Deng Sanmu's "The Study of Seal Engraving".
Mr.’s book is divided into two parts. The first part describes seal script and seal. Among them, the first chapter talks about seal script and seal, including: 1. The origin of writing; 2. The factors that constitute writing; 3. The evolution of seal cutting. The next part contains contents such as seal writing, seal writing, knife skills, and style recognition. It can be seen that the master's view is that before picking up a sword, you must first learn characters, learn the six books (the composition of characters), and learn the evolution of characters. These are also the basics of learning calligraphy.
After that, in the first sentence of the second chapter, the teacher said: "Sealing is mainly based on seal script, so to learn to engrave seals, you must first master seal script." That is to say, you must learn to write seal script, the so-called seal script. If you don’t recognize seal characters, how can you carve seal seals? If you don't know the seal characters and don't know the six books, you won't recognize the words you've written, and naturally others won't recognize them either.
Then comes the composition, knowing the Zhubai script, knowing the regular arrangement of characters, knowing the authenticity of the name seal, etc. Only then can the seal be arranged.
At the same time, we should also read more of the seals of our predecessors, but it is not advisable to read too much of contemporary works for beginners, just like when practicing calligraphy, it is advisable to refer to ancient times. If you read more, many of the theories you have learned will have a place to live.
Of course, it does not mean that you have to learn all these necessary things before you can start seal cutting. While that is indeed the best approach, it is not practical for us. These are indeed basic, but you can learn while carving to prevent you from losing interest in seal carving after learning the basics for a while. But judging from my learning experience, it is better to lay a solid foundation, because I used to rely on my several years of calligraphy skills and just imprinted without studying the basics seriously. As a result, I hit a wall everywhere and in the end, I still had to learn from scratch. .
I would like to recommend a tutorial to you, which is Mr. Deng Sanmu's "Seal Engraving". It is the master's work, and it is also the handout of Mr. Deng Sanmu's teaching. Don't read the tutorials of so-called experts. Their level is definitely not as good as Mr. Deng's, and there is no guarantee that what they say does not contain a lot of mistakes.
Finally I wish you success. Regarding classical art and culture, today's society is really missing a lot. If one more person learns, the more things our ancestors have learned will be more likely to be passed on and carried forward.
