China Academy of Fine Arts was first founded in 1928, which is called National Academy of Fine Arts. 1929, renamed as National Hangzhou Art Institute; 1938, changed to National Art Institute. 1950, becoming East China Branch of Central Academy of Fine Arts; 1958, renamed Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts; 1993, renamed China Academy of Fine Arts.
The school campus covers an area of 1 1,000 mu, with a construction area of nearly 300,000 square meters. Spanning Hangzhou and Shanghai, it has three campuses: Nanshan Campus, Xiangshan Campus and Zhangjiang Campus. Nanshan Campus, which was completed in 2003, has realized the modern interpretation of the Academy of Ink Painting and Fine Arts. Xiangshan Campus, which was put into use in 2007, gave birth to the vision of an art home, and Liangzhu New Campus is also under construction.
The school now has 16 secondary colleges, including China Painting and Calligraphy Art College, Painting Art College, Sculpture and Public Art College, Cross-media Art College, Design Art College, Handicraft Art College, Film and Animation Art College, Architectural Art College, Art Humanities College, Art Management and Education College, Shanghai Design College, Innovative Design College, International Education College, International Union College, Continuing Education College and Marxist College.
