Crescent Moon Spring, known as Shajing in ancient times and commonly known as Medicine Spring, is located in Crescent Moon Spring Scenic Area, Dunhuang City, Gansu Province. Crescent Moon Spring is nearly 100 meters long from north to south and about 25 meters wide from east to west. The spring water is deep in the east and shallow in the west. The deepest point is about 5 meters. It is curved like a crescent moon. It is known as "the first spring in the desert". The Crescent Spring is known as "one of the most beautiful scenery outside the Great Wall" and one of the "three wonders" of Dunhuang. It has become a tourist attraction that people in China and even the world yearn for.

There was originally a group of simple, elegant and well-proportioned buildings on the south bank of the spring. From east to west, there were more than 100 buildings including the Empress Hall, Dragon King Palace, Bodhisattva Hall, Yaowang Cave, and Thunder God Tower. There are more than 100 colorful sculptures in each main palace and hundreds of murals. Crescent Moon Spring has three treasures: iron-backed fish, five-color sand and seven-star grass. The sand in Mingsha Mountain comes in five colors: red, yellow, green, white and black.
