Chu Yanju’s profile

When he was young, his uncle inspired him to learn regular script. After graduating from normal school in 1961, he enlisted in the army. Apart from training in production, he continued to study, thus laying the foundation for his calligraphy. After changing his career, he engaged in exhibition publicity work, which created a good environment for him to enter the palace of calligraphy art. In the early 1970s, he devoted himself to the study of Han steles and bamboo slips, starting from Han li, and gained a simplicity and flexibility; in the 1980s, he started from Erwang, Su Mi, Wang Juesi, and Yu Youren absorbed the essence of calligraphy, and their works became more rigorous and profound. Their characters were strict but lively, free but not wild. Later, they integrated official and horizontal lines into one, and the official meaning can be seen in the lines.
