Jingdezhen Ceramics University is a multidisciplinary university named after ceramics. It is one of the first 31 independent undergraduate art colleges in the country and 94 qualified to recruit international students in China under Chinese government scholarships. It is one of the first universities to participate in the Ministry of Education’s Outstanding Engineer Education and Training Program, the Ministry of Education’s Demonstration University for Deepening Innovation and Entrepreneurship Education Reform, and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s China Intangible Cultural Heritage Inheritance Group Study and Training Program. The school is known as “ Ceramic Whampoa”.
The school began in 1910 as the China Ceramics School (the school is located in Poyang, Jiangxi). In 1912, it was renamed Jiangxi Provincial Raozhou Ceramics School. In 1915, it was renamed Jiangxi Provincial Second Class A Industrial School, and a branch was established in Jingdezhen in 1916. In 1925, it was renamed Jiangxi Provincial Ceramics School. In 1927, it was renamed Jiangxi Provincial Ceramics School. In 1934, it moved to Jiujiang, Jiangxi Province and was renamed Jiangxi Provincial Jiujiang Ceramics Vocational School. In 1948, it was upgraded to Jiangxi Provincial Ceramics College.
In 1952, the departments of colleges and universities across the country were restructured, and Jingdezhen Ceramics Experimental Research Institute (now known as China Light Industry Ceramics Research Institute) was established. In 1958, with the approval of the Jiangxi Provincial People's Committee, Jingdezhen Ceramics College, an undergraduate institution, was established on the basis of the silicate majors of Jingdezhen Ceramic Art School, Jingdezhen Ceramic Workers Technical School, and Jiangxi Industrial Technical School. In 1999, China Light Industry Ceramics Research Institute was merged into the school. In 2016, it was renamed Jingdezhen Ceramics University.
As of 2022, Jingdezhen Ceramics University ranks 294th in the 2022 Chinese University Rankings; it ranks 253rd in the 2022 ABC Chinese University Rankings.
