What did Yi Bingshou experience in learning calligraphy?
Yi Bingshou studied under Liu Yong, Weng Fanggang and others in his early years, especially in the Jin and Tang Dynasties. After the establishment, he worked as an aide in Wang Wenduan's home in Guo Xiang, during which he could enjoy the treasures, so he copied and wrote deliberately, which benefited a lot. From Yi Bingshou's understanding of Han Dynasty inscriptions, we can see that before he was 40 years old, he had extensively studied the inscriptions of Pei Cen, Han Ren, Yin Zhou, Kong Zhou, Yi Ying, Fang Heng, Zhang Qian, etc., but these copied works are very different from the original inscriptions, and his decorative official script style is very rich. It can be seen that Yi's study of Han steles is only from the perspective of obtaining the simple artistic effect, and it is only a means of appreciating and grasping. After 40 years old, Yi Bingshou's career was bumpy, which prompted him to calm down and devote himself to the study of calligraphy. After the age of 50, Yi lived in Yangzhou, where there was a rich collection of humanities at that time, and made close friends with the "Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou", during which he often learned from each other. At this point, calligraphy has achieved great success.
