The most prosperous period in the history of calligraphy is the period when famous artists came forth in large numbers and created a generation of calligraphy schools.
There were many famous calligraphers in ancient China, among which Wang Xizhi, Ou Yangxun, Yan Zhenqing, Liu Gongquan, Su Shi and Huang Tingjian were the most outstanding. They mainly lived in the Tang and Song Dynasties when the economy and culture were extremely prosperous.
