Yang Zaichun: Once the misunderstandings in calligraphy are solved, will there be a breakthrough?

Mr. Yang Zaichun, a master calligrapher and one of the founders of the Chinese Calligraphy Association, also said that to learn calligraphy, you must first solve some misunderstandings. Only when these problems are solved can your calligraphy level be able to achieve breakthroughs. And what is the misunderstanding mentioned by Mr. Yang Zaichun? That is, calligraphy is about "what to write", "how to write" and "how to write".

Myth 1: What should be written when practicing calligraphy should be written in official script of Han and Wei dynasties

Huang Tingjian once said: Anyone who writes calligraphy must be familiar with the calligraphy of Wei and Jin Dynasties, understand it by heart, and be proud of the writing methods of the ancients. . ?This coincides with Mr. Yang Zaichun's concept that learning calligraphy is nothing more than starting from copying the works of masters. However, the calligraphy of each dynasty in China has its own merits. Which period of calligraphy and which master's work is more suitable to copy? Nowadays, whether it is education in traditional schools or teaching in society, Yan Liu's calligraphy and regular script are the first to be respected, and it is believed that it is most appropriate to start with the neat and regular regular script.

Mr. Yang Zaichun was also like this at first. He said: The so-called regular script means model, which is calligraphy that can be used as a benchmark. It cannot be narrowly defined as regular script, which means regular script.

Regular Script

The Xiaozhuan script of the Qin Dynasty was the universal script throughout the country, so it can be called regular script. The same is true for the official script of the Han Dynasty. Therefore, in a broad sense, "regular script" is a form of calligraphy that every dynasty has. Mr. Yang Zaichun also believed in "regular script" as the best way to practice calligraphy. At first, he often borrowed his teacher's bicycle in his spare time and rode to the museum to copy the works of calligraphy masters on display. He copied all calligraphy works.

After going there many times, he met Huang Gaohan at the museum. Through Huang Gaohan's help, Mr. Yang Zaichun studied under Zheng Songxian and started his beloved calligraphy path.

In the era before the Chinese Calligraphy Association was born, before the Special Period, there was the "Chinese Calligraphy Research Society", and Yang Zaichun's teacher Zheng Songxian was the president of the society, so his master Zheng Songxian was very interested in calligraphy research. His achievements are evident. When Mr. Yang Zaichun presented Yan Zhenqing's "Duobao Pagoda", which he had copied for many days, to his master for review, the teacher glanced at it briefly and put it aside, then asked him: "Why do you write it backwards?" ?Mr. Yang Zaichun was confused. He copied them in order and didn’t know what the teacher meant.

When the teacher reminded him and asked him to think about the development and evolution of Chinese calligraphy history, he suddenly realized that Chinese characters began with oracle bone inscriptions, and regular script ranked at the end. What the teacher meant was The regular script he copied was the finalized form of the evolution of Chinese characters and was the most difficult part.
