The surname Xianyu has two origins:
1. It comes from the surname Zi, which is the combination of the name of the country and the name of the town. At the end of the Shang Dynasty, King Zhou had his uncle Jizi, who was granted the title of Imperial Master in Ji (now Taigu County, Shanxi Province). He repeatedly remonstrated with King Zhou about his debauchery and cruelty, but King Zhou remained the same and did not want to repent. Zi was imprisoned. After King Wu of Zhou destroyed the Shang Dynasty, Jizi bluntly advised King Wu to practice benevolent government, but he refused to accept King Wu's request and serve as a minister again. He left Liaodong and established the country of Korea (it is said that this country was the predecessor of today's North Korea). According to legend, one of his descendants, Zhongzhong, was granted the title of Yuyi. He combined the name of the country and the name of the city and called himself the Xianyu clan.
2 King Zhou of Shang Dynasty had an uncle who was sealed in Ji (in the east of Taigu County, Shanxi) and was called Jizi. Not long after King Zhou came to the throne, when Jizi saw that he started to use ivory chopsticks, he sighed: "If you use ivory chopsticks, you must use jade cups to match them, and then you will pursue other rare items. This is the beginning of luxury and enjoyment!" How can the country run well if the king only cares about pleasure?" As expected, King Zhou became more and more debauched and cruel. Jizi remonstrated many times, and King Zhou became impatient and simply locked him up. After King Zhou Wu destroyed the Shang Dynasty, he released Jizi and asked him for advice on how to gain the support of the merchants. Jizi believed that benevolent government should be implemented and pacification methods should be used to win the hearts of the people. King Wu wanted to make Jizi an official, but Jizi did not want to be a minister of Zhou, so he fled to Liaodong and established the state of Korea. Among the descendants of Jizi, there was a man named Zhong who had a fiefdom in Yu. He combined the character "Xian" in the name of the country and the character "Yu" in the name of the town into the word "Xianyu" as his surname, and called it the Xianyu family.
