Zheng Xie was born in 1693 and died in 1765. He was a scholar in Kangxi, a juren in Yongzheng and a scholar in Qianlong. He lives in Yangzhou and sells paintings for a living. As one of the "Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou", his poems, books and paintings are praised as "three wonders" and he is good at painting Zhu Lan.
Zheng Banqiao is good at painting bamboo, orchid, stone, pine and chrysanthemum, among which orchid and bamboo are the most famous, with elegant modeling and strong style. He advocated that the ancient law should not be ignored, and the law should be natural and enjoyable. He put forward a three-stage painting theory of "having bamboo in the eye", "having bamboo in the chest" and "having bamboo in the hand". He combined thoughtful thoughts with skillful pen and ink skills, and Banqiao took cursive script as the backbone to draw bamboo, which received the artistic effect of "not being chaotic and sparse, getting rid of the habits of the times and having great power". The bamboo painted by Banqiao is lifelike, with both form and spirit. I once wrote: "My bamboo is refined and elegant, with lines in calligraphy, lines in bamboo, shades in calligraphy, shades in bamboo, density in calligraphy and density in bamboo." He is good at writing bamboo, and even wrote the poem "Between Bamboo and Stone", expressing his aloof feelings with the "between nothing and many knots" of bamboo. He is handsome and vigorous in writing, and he is known as "a blue flower that never fades in four seasons, a bamboo that never stumbles, a stone that never stumbles, and a man who never changes." Jiang Shiquan's Poems on Painting Orchids said: "Banqiao is painted like a orchid, elegant and graceful, Banqiao is written like a orchid, and beautiful leaves are numerous and graceful." In this passage, the relationship between "book" and "painting" in his works is really incisive.
