Wu Fengshan, a native of Zhenren, is a retired worker in Martyrs Cemetery. He is 68 years old. He has been a primary school teacher for 25 years and worked in the Martyrs Cemetery for 20 years. By chance, Nantong organized personnel to write "Dialect Research in Nantong Area" and also transferred him to participate. Rugao is an integral part of Nantong. As a native of Rugao, he is familiar with rural slang and Rugao accent. He went deep into the original 53 towns in the city to collect information, collected dialect vocabulary and folk slang, recorded timbre and tone, and accumulated a lot of first-hand information, which laid a solid foundation for the study of Rugao dialect. He began to ask the teacher for advice. Under the guidance of experts and professors such as Lu, Bao and Wang, he systematically studied the professional knowledge of linguistics and studied Rugao dialect with scientific methods. At the age of 60, he bought computer equipment at his own expense, taught himself computer operation, used modern tools to input and sort out the collected data, recorded his own experiences and analyzed and sorted out the research results. He formed his own unique views from the origin and formation of Rugao dialect, the differences of dialects in different regions, the comparison with other dialects and the investigation of Rugao dialect. After 18 years of painstaking research, hard work, desk writing, keyboard tapping, almost blind eyes, finally completed the 400,000-word monograph "Rugao Dialect Research".
Mr. Wu Fengshan, as an unknown ordinary Rugao native and a layman in linguistics, began to study Rugao dialect at the age of 50, but his long and arduous research results have been highly valued by experts and scholars. Mr. Bao, former president of Jiangsu Language Society and professor of Nanjing University, approved the manuscript for him at the age of 80, and Mr. Wang Jun, member of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, vice president of China National Language Society, professor of Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and researcher of Institute of Language and Character Application, personally prefaced it for him.
Mr. Wu Fengshan wrote A Study of Rugao Dialect. His investigation, research, consulting, collecting relevant information, using computers and even paper are all at his own expense. With his 1000 retirement salary, the difficulty can be imagined. His infatuation and persistence in Rugao dialect research, his pursuit of Rugao cultural undertakings and his loyalty to Rugao people fully reflect the enthusiasm, hard work and innovation of Rugao people!
The manuscript of Rugao Dialect Research has been completed, but it has not been officially published. How to contribute personal research results to the society, play its due role and leave a spiritual wealth for Rugao people has always been a difficult problem for Mr. Wu Fengshan. Kindhearted experts, scholars and friends warmly introduced and recommended him. Manuscripts and floppy disk materials have been circulated in their hands for three or four years, but the answers have to be published at their own expense. With Mr. Wu Fengshan's retirement salary, it is difficult to publish Rugao dialect research at his own expense. He is in a desperate situation.
When Pu Wenhai, the former chairman of Rugao CPPCC, served as the director of the Civil Affairs Bureau, he learned that Mr. Wu Fengshan was studying Rugao dialect and gave him a lot of care and support. When learning that Mr. Wu Fengshan had difficulty in publishing a book, Comrade Pu Wenhai first suggested that CPPCC give help and support. The meeting of CPPCC chairmen specially discussed the publication of Rugao Dialect Research. The chairmen were moved by Mr. Wu Fengshan's persistent and long-term commitment to studying Rugao dialect. Starting from saving Rugao's intangible cultural heritage, expanding the social benefits of Mr. Wu Fengshan's research results and promoting the construction of Rugao's three civilizations, the chairman's meeting decided to help Mr. Wu Fengshan publish Rugao Dialect Research. The decision of the CPPCC Chairman's Meeting was strongly supported by the Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government, and the Municipal Finance Bureau arranged special funds for the publication of the book according to the instructions of the government leaders.
In the process of publication, Rugao Dialect Research has attracted the attention and support of people from all walks of life. Because both the manuscript and the floppy disk were lost during the transfer, only one manuscript was left. After Mr. Wu Fengshan's writing, the computer was attacked by a virus, and the data stored in the computer was disrupted and lost. For example, if you re-enter and edit, there are many words, phonetic symbols, uncommon words and recreated words in the manuscript, which is very complicated and time-consuming and laborious. If you have technical problems, help him find the science and technology bureau. Comrade Chen Zhaoping, director of the Municipal Science and Technology Bureau, gave up the May Day holiday and personally went to Mr. Wu Fengshan's house to check the computer operation. When the file could not be read, he disassembled the hard disk, recovered the system structure information in the damaged hard disk, and recovered all the files of Mr. Wu's final version from more than 20 thousand lost files. Together with Xu Qiang, assistant director of the Science and Technology Bureau, he found the international phonetic symbols and fonts used in the original computer input through file comparison. Finally, Mr. Wu Fengshan's manuscript stored in the computer was restored to its original state, which laid the foundation for proofreading and publishing and saved manpower and financial resources. Mr. Yu Yang, former deputy director of the local records office of Hailing District, Taizhou City, accepted our invitation to collate Mr. Wu Fengshan's Rugao Dialect Study. Mr. Xu Erchang, a member of Jiangsu Calligraphers Association, honorary chairman of Rugao Calligraphers Association and retired teacher of rugao middle school, wrote the title. Chen Congying, a sophomore at Southeast University, overheard that we were going to publish Rugao Dialect Research for Mr. Wu Fengshan and volunteered to design the cover for the book. Rugao Xinyi Printing Factory not only did a lot of work for the publication and distribution of this book, but also gave some financial help. Bian Xiaotao, an engineer of the Municipal Survey Institute, redrawn 20 Rugao language zoning maps according to the city administrative zoning map more than ten years ago.
