When he was a teenager, he studied piano and calligraphy from Cai Yong, a writer and calligrapher in the Eastern Han Dynasty. Cai Yong lived in seclusion in Wu. Cai Yong admired Gu Yong's talent and thought he would achieve something in the future, so he gave his name to the other party. In the year of Gu Yong's weak crown, Gu Yong was recommended as the magistrate of Hefei by state and county officials. Later, he served as a local official in Louxian, Qua, Shangyu and other places, and made great achievements wherever he went. In the fifth year of Jian 'an (200), Sun Quan was also the magistrate of Huiji, with Gu Yong as the county magistrate and acting as the magistrate to handle all affairs. Later, he moved to Dali to serve Chang, and was also ordered by Shangshu to be named the township head. In the fourth year of Huang Wu (225), he changed to Taichang and became the Duke of Liling, succeeding Sun Shao (182-245) as Prime Minister and Minister of Shang Ping until his death.
When he became prime minister, Gu Yong often visited the people's sufferings and put forward many appropriate and effective measures, which made great achievements, but he never took credit or bullied others. He gets along with Sun Quan, pays attention to the etiquette of monarch and minister, is loyal to the country, and puts national interests first in everything. Be kind and modest to colleagues and subordinates. He has his own unique opinions and ideas, considers problems thoroughly, handles problems safely, and pays great attention to methods. With his careful assistance, Wu rose in an all-round way in a short time and became prosperous, and was called a "famous minister".
In November (243), the sixth year of the Red Army, Gu Yong died of illness. Sun Quan was dressed in plain clothes, and posthumous title paid tribute. His tomb was in Xiaowangshan.

Sun Quan also said, "It makes people unhappy to sit on the ground." It's terrible.
In the same year, he was changed to Taichang, appointed as the Hou of Liling, replaced by the Prime Minister, and made peace with his ministers. The civil and military officials they chose, each doing his own thing, were at a loss.
[243] Gu Yong died, and Sun Quan worshipped his youngest son, Ji Gu, as the riding captain. Sun Quan, dressed in plain clothes, hung in the air and wrote "Su Hou".
[258] Emperor Sun Xiu acceded to the throne, saying, "Therefore, the prime minister is harmonious, loyal and virtuous, assisting the country with courtesy, and abolishing Hou Tong. I am very satisfied with it. Therefore, Yu Xijue, the second son of Yong, was chosen as the Hou of Liling to show his old glory. "
