Dancheng is an ancient county with a history of more than 2,000 years. There is a Duanzhai site 5 kilometers south of the county seat, which belongs to Dawenkou culture in the early stage and Longshan culture in the middle and late stage, and a large number of pottery have been unearthed. There is a tomb of Ji An, an upright official in the Western Han Dynasty, which is well preserved and is a provincial-level cultural relic protection unit.
During the period of War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Dancheng was a revolutionary holy land. Anti-Japanese generals Peng Xuefeng, Zhang Aiping, Wei Fenglou and Li Zimu all carried out revolutionary work in Dancheng. There are Peng Xuefeng New Fourth Army Guerrilla Detachment Training Memorial Hall, Red Army Monument and Zhang Youming Memorial Pavilion.
Dancheng people especially love calligraphy art. There are many calligraphers and celebrities, and Mo Bao is radiant. Historically, Dong Qichang and Wang Duo once lived in Dancheng, leaving precious works of art here. A number of influential calligraphers appeared in modern times, such as Wang Zutong, Yanzhao Zhu and Liu Chengzhi. Dancheng was named "the hometown of calligraphy in China".
