On November 18, 2009, US President Obama visited Beijing. After seeing the "Golden Jade Tiger Talisman" inscribed by the famous red calligrapher General Yuan Wei as a national gift, the U.S. Ambassador to China invited General Yuan Wei to write a personal calligraphy work for U.S. President Obama. Yuan Wei happily accepted the calligraphy and wrote the four characters "watch the sea and listen to the waves". He hoped that through this calligraphy work, Obama could appreciate the mystery of Chinese calligraphy art and appreciate the broad mind of the Chinese nation.
