Bai Juyi's Acacia Poems

Endless longing

Bai Juyi

Bianshui flow, Surabaya flow, flows to Guazhou ancient ferry. Wu Shan is a little sad.

Think long and hate long, until it's time to pay back. Yueming people lean on the building.

This is a lyrical little word with a long lasting appeal, which shows a yearning for the distance on a moonlit night. Who is the lyric hero? So far, no agreement has been reached. Now, some critics usually think that the lyric hero in the poem is a "thinking woman", leaning against a dangerous building on a moonlit night, looking at the flowing water outside the window and thinking of a distant lover. Judging from the atmosphere expressed by the words, it really makes people feel sad, just like a woman leaning against the building and talking.

"Bianshui, Surabaya, flows to Guazhou ancient ferry. Wushan is worried. " Bianshui and Surabaya stay up all night, running endlessly, and the poet is like watching the water. As the water flows, a series of thoughts also flow in his chest. People are still and their hearts are fluctuating. Therefore, the beginning of the poem is a long stream of sadness, which has both the taste of "comparison" and the taste of "xing". From Bianshui to Guazhou Gudutou, a dynamic process has been completed, which is actually a visual presentation of the psychological activities of the lyric hero.

From Biansishui to Guazhou Gudu, time and space jumped greatly, showing the poet's extraordinary imagination. This endless river carries the poet's feelings of parting; The water flows farther and farther, the longer the feelings, the deeper the sadness. Many readers didn't feel the poet's sadness condensed on Wu Shan until they read Wu Shan's Little Mourning. As we all know, in the long river of "Bianshui, Surabaya and Guazhou Gudu", there is no place that does not contain the poet's endless worries. I don't know when and who turned running water into an emotional thing. I was the first person to combine running water with parting. This expression became more clear when it reached Li Houzhu in the Southern Tang Dynasty, Qin Guan's "Stars Around Chenzhou by the River" in the Song Dynasty, and Li Qingzhao's "Flowers Drift from Zero to Zero" in the Song Dynasty.

"Think leisurely, hate leisurely, hate back to the original. Yueming people lean on the building. " In the poet's mind, water is also sad, and mountains are also sad. However, due to the proximity and distance, this sadness was finally taken to another place, from the torrent to a little stagnation. However, on the moonlit night, the lyric hero leans against the dangerous building and looks at the southern sky. The deeper he thinks, the more he loves. From "Wu Shan's Little Mourning" to resentment, it is endless. This description from dynamic to static and then back to dynamic focuses on the inner feelings of the lyric hero. The natural landscape becomes a sentient thing through the vision, hearing, touch and even the whole soul of the lyric hero, and integrates with the scenery, meaning and environment.

The lower finch and the upper finch are just the opposite, from far to near, from there to here. The poet's thoughts circulate under the moon and sky, showing an extremely noisy mood. We can even imagine how many moonlit nights the poet tossed and turned, couldn't sleep, sat up and put on his clothes, leaned against the building and looked out, stroking the bar into a sigh. Therefore, "people leaning on the moon building" can be regarded as the crowning touch of the whole poetic realm.
