The Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, formerly known as the Central South Academy of Fine Arts, was founded in Wuhan, Hubei in 1953 with the approval of the Ministry of Higher Education. It was formed by merging departments.
In 1958, the school moved south to Guangzhou, changed its name to Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts and began to recruit undergraduate students; in 1981, the school obtained the right to award master's degrees; in 2004, the school built a new campus in Guangzhou University Town, forming "One school, two districts" school running pattern. It will be approved to become a doctorate-granting unit in 2021.
According to the school’s official website in August 2022, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts has 12 colleges and 1 affiliated secondary art school, offering 28 majors (29 professional directions). In February 2022, the school added the majors of intelligent interaction design, fiber art, and art education.
