The guiding ideology of the Westernization School in establishing the Westernization cause was first expressed more completely by Feng Guifen, and later Zhang Zhidong and others summarized it as: Chinese learning is the body, Western learning is the application.

Feng Guifen (1809-1874) was a thinker and essayist in the late Qing Dynasty. Lin Yi, also known as Jingting, was born in Wuxian County (now Suzhou, Jiangsu Province). He once studied under Lin Zexu. In the 20th year of Daoguang's reign, he became a Jinshi and was awarded the title of editor. At the beginning of Xianfeng's reign, he organized regiment training. At the beginning of Tongzhi, he entered the Li Hongzhang shogunate. He worked in parallel prose when he was young, but in middle age he devoted himself to ancient prose, with a special emphasis on practical application of the world.
Set up a Cantonese dialect center in Shanghai to cultivate Western talents. He lectured successively at various academies in Jinling, Shanghai and Suzhou. Feng Guifen was a pioneer of reformism and was the first to express the guiding ideology of the Westernization Movement of "Chinese style and Western style". He is the author of "Xiaofilu Protest", "Shuowenjie Field Notes" and "Xianzhitang Poems and Essays".
Feng Guifen is good at calligraphy. He is famous for his seal script and official script, and is especially good at official script. Feng Guifen has an upright character, a serious demeanor, a pure heart, and an abandonment of comfort. In his early days as an official in the dynasty, Lin Zexu was serving as governor of Jiangsu and he valued Feng Guifen and thought he was a talent of the country. When Lin Zexu was editing books on Northwest Water Conservancy, Feng Guifen participated in the editing work.
