Painter's self-report
Drawing a portrait of Dong Qichang once embarrassed me.
School of visual arts, Fudan University, where I work, is located in Songjiang University Town. This vibrant place unexpectedly reminds me of two people who once lived here in the same occupation as me: one is Dong Qichang in the late Ming Dynasty, and the other is Cheng Shifa in modern times. Our school will hold historical art exhibitions and set up corresponding research institutions; The task has been given, and I am worrying about the topic selection; Should Dong Qichang's portrait be hung in the exhibition? Why is this challenging proposition so interesting to me that I can't get rid of it? This involves the deep psychological factors of artistic creation, which is difficult to answer at the moment!
Dong Qichang is a famous painter and calligrapher in China. He is a court official who has lived in the countryside for a long time, and he is also a local figure with bad conduct. Angry villagers once destroyed and burned his mansion, stretching dozens of streets. I admire Dong Shi's art. He created a generation of elegance, but despised Dong Shi's character. What will Dong Qichang's future portrait present to the world? This question puts me in a dilemma. When I decided to paint, there was a strange phenomenon: every time I drove along the South Seventh Factory Road in Huating House on my way to school, I would have a strange idea; I think: Maybe it was the building of fertile land in Dong Qichang, or his luxurious house base, and the wheels were pressed down; My wheel may have just rolled around the corner of Dong Qichang's painting case. Where are the pavilions, terraces and secret rooms of Zhu Lan Qujing Garden burned by villagers?
At the same time, my judgment standard has also been questioned; The so-called belief that "personality is the style of painting" and "writing is like a person" may be just empty talk? For this reason, I looked up historical materials and local chronicles, and tried my best to find that even a little bit can conform to the lofty and solid style in Dong Shi's paintings and calligraphy, which made me reconfirm the above beliefs about "personality is the style of painting" and "writing is like a person". This is what we firmly believe; But unfortunately, the historical materials are full of all kinds of evil deeds about Dong Qichang, such as robbing women and fishing, which makes me unable to let go for a long time; Judging from several specious portraits of Dong Shi left over at that time, there is a common feature: there is a symmetrical black spot on each cheek. What Dong Shi looks like is still inconclusive, but there are black spots that are conclusive enough to outline the conceptual image of the villain in my mind.
Soon after, I accidentally read a passage and finally untied the knot in my heart, which gave me an epiphany; Hegel, a German philosopher, once said: It is inappropriate to replace the historical evaluation of great men from the perspective of private life with historical evaluation. Whether the philosopher's statement is accurate or not, I reconsidered the idea of portrait and finished it. It is not difficult for a careful audience to distinguish the traces of this kind of thinking and struggle from my works.
People are multifaceted; Perhaps, the era of labeling and unified characterization is gone forever. .
