Running script and cursive script belong to sketch, while seal script, official script and regular script belong to regular script.
Traditionally, it is advocated to start with standardizing the style of writing, so that we can master the structure of Chinese characters and the shape of strokes well, and then learn the style of sketching, so that it is easy to avoid the problems of incorrect fonts, scribbling and weak strokes.
In the past, I emphasized the need to learn regular script first, mainly considering the practicality of regular script. Because in some formal occasions, writing needs block letters, and in the era when hard pen is not popular, brush is the main writing tool in China.
In our daily life today, writing formal words does not need a brush, so we can also consider learning brush calligraphy from seal script or official script. In particular, using seal script has advantages that other seal scripts do not have: 1. Seal script is closest to the etymology of Chinese characters, which is very helpful to understand the word-formation and structure of Chinese characters. 2. The font of seal script is round and long, especially small seal script, and the strokes are even and round, which requires high strength control and writing skills. Once the foundation is solid, you can control the line shape of the pen well. This basic ability is of great help to calligraphy and Chinese painting. When studying other books, you will get twice the result with half the effort.
Controlling the shape of strokes and lines is one of the necessary foundations for practicing brush calligraphy. In addition, in cursive script, especially in cursive script, many strokes, strokes and capitals are different from our current regular script. It is not easy to understand without knowing the source and basic rules of Chinese characters. So it may be more difficult to learn cursive script directly, which requires more energy and effort.
