Personal work

He has made outstanding achievements in the fields of Ming and Qing history, philology, epigraphy and Han society, and has written many important works and academic papers such as Slaves Made in Ming Dynasty, Northeasters in Early Qing Dynasty, A Brief History of Nanming Dynasty, Historical Records of the Founding of the Qing Dynasty, Historical Records of the Late Ming Dynasty (two updated editions were published after liberation), and the Party and Social Movement in Ming and Qing Dynasties.

contribution

In the process of the formation of these historical achievements, especially after liberation, xie guozhen showed great interest in the material of the note novels in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and only he could understand the beauty and scenery. Previously, in historical research, people paid the most attention to and mainly used the records of official history, and paid little attention to unpretentious note novels; This is consistent with the development level of society at that time and the social demand for historical research.

Since the 1920s, people began to pay attention to the study of culturology and grass-roots society, and thus realized that it is necessary to broaden the scope of materials in order to establish new historiography. However, the systematic understanding of the extensive use and value of materials in note novels is relatively slow. To study the history of Ming and Qing Dynasties, it is far from enough to rely only on the official biographies of "many things are hidden", "vague" and "dull stagnation", and there are various types of documents to supplement the shortage of official historical materials. "That's just the books left over from the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the records of our neighbor Korea's Li Dynasty, and the files, materials, official documents and books kept by the local government at that time.

Xie guozhen, on the other hand, has a soft spot for note novels. As he himself said, "I study history, focusing on the turn of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, focusing on ancient literature and social economy, while searching for historical facts and studying problems, trying to find nourishing materials that people don't pay much attention to from unofficial history's notes."

Therefore, xie guozhen's introduction, utilization and publication of note novels in Ming and Qing Dynasties, as well as his understanding of the value of note novels in Ming and Qing Dynasties, are an important part of his historical thought and an important contribution to the history of Ming and Qing Dynasties.
