The first layer is the primitive brain, also called the reptilian brain, which is the brain we developed in the age of reptiles;
The second layer is the emotional brain, which is our brain based on the reptiles The brain slowly develops into the mammalian brain;
The third layer is the cortical brain, which is the neocerebral cortex that we humans have evolved over tens of thousands of years.
For the brain, books that are densely packed with words are complicated and annoying; but when reading, if you can add some concise words, such as "The train runs fast because it relies on The brain will like jingles such as "headband" and it will be easier to be persuaded.
If a book lists a dozen points of view at once, the brain will get bored; but if you organize them into three major categories, and divide them into 3-4 points under each category, the structure will be better The stronger and clearer it is, the easier it is for the brain to remember. This is the specialty of the left-brain logical brain, which is the essence of the book "The Pyramid Principle".
The brain also has a preference, that is, it likes graphic things. In other words, the brain likes to see pictures. This is also a characteristic of the right brain, which likes pictures.
One of the last characteristics of the brain is its love of rewarding itself. It’s hard to persevere when you read alone in silence, even if your head is hanging from your head and your buttocks are tingling; but if you share your experience in the circle of friends every day, you will get likes from a group of people: “Wow, this person is so awesome!” Likes are external rewards and recognition. But it is a deep and invisible intrinsic reward.
The reason is very simple!
Because they find this information useless and inconsistent with the nature of the brain, they do not transmit the information to your cortical brain - the neocortex.
So whether you don’t want to study or can’t study has nothing to do with you. It is determined by the innate mechanism of your brain!
So the first level of "The Onion Reading Method" is - understanding your brain!
The first thing is to control the energy of the brain. The time for reading should be chosen when the brain is most alert and energetic, such as getting up an hour earlier in the morning or waking up after a break at noon. Never read when the brain is the most tired, such as before going to bed at night.
Secondly, let the brain focus. Read with your questions and purpose in mind, so that you can quickly find what your brain needs from a book. This is the point of your reading. If a book is all about points, it has no point.
The third is to improve the brain’s concentration. The brain loves to wander, so focus on one thing at a specific time and try to do it to the best of your ability. For example, use Pomodoro to practice our brain's concentration, and use meditation, running, etc. to exercise our brain's concentration.
There are three states of reading. The first is the state of anxiety, where you feel stressed and want to finish reading quickly, or you cannot read it; the second is the state of boredom, where you feel that reading this book is boring and boring. Boring, wanting to end it as soon as possible; the third is the flow state, when we are reading a certain book, we will forget the passage of time, whether it took 25 minutes or an hour, we will completely ignore it, we are in this flow state status, you can converse fluently with the author.
In a flow state, the brain can process information 500 times more efficiently than usual. Not only will you not feel tired, but you will also feel refreshed. Therefore, we need to adjust the difficulty of reading so that it is both challenging and tactile, and then increase the difficulty bit by bit, so that we can enter the flow reading state more quickly, and the more we read, the better. Hi!
The brain's short-term memory storage time is limited, just like Einhobin's forgetting curve, most knowledge will be forgotten. The way to enhance the brain's memory is to store knowledge directly in the brain's "hard drive".
The method of creating a brain hard drive is very simple, you just need to repeat it over and over again. You need to retrieve and store them repeatedly to turn these short-term memories into long-term memories. Ways to process information repeatedly include sharing, writing cards, writing notes, reading it again, etc.
According to the learning pyramid, the most effective method of repetition is sharing, that is, "speaking is the best way to learn."
That is to say, don’t share it because you know it, but tell it because you don’t know how to learn it. "When a teacher truly learns a piece of knowledge, it is when he teaches students." Every lecture is a review and brain friction.
Therefore, "a good book is worth reading more than three times" is the truth. After reading it for the first time, you may not understand many concepts. After reading it for the second time, you will understand some, and by the third time you will understand it. As time goes by, I remember more things, and then I write articles and share them to further become familiar with and memorize the concepts I learned before.
To develop a habit, we must work hard from three aspects: prompts, actions, and rewards.
Tips such as "Bring a book in your bag and start reading it every day";
Actions such as setting a fixed time every day, such as getting up an hour early to start reading;
Rewards are not necessarily material rewards, the accumulated inner sense of accomplishment will be more effective. For example, in the next 21 days (or a certain period of time), spend 5 minutes reading every day in the first week; 10 minutes reading every day in the second week; and increase to 15 minutes reading every day in the third week. , and so on.
