On Ruoshan Island, Shitang Town, Wenling City, Zhejiang Province, there is an ancient small fishing village called Liruo Village. There is still a traditional dance preserved there: Ruoshan Dazuogu. According to the "Comprehensive Collection of Chinese Folk Dances", Ruoshan Dazougu is the only traditional dance of a fishing village in my country.
The fishermen in the Ruoshan area have the custom of holding lanterns in the middle of the night during the first lunar month, so their ancestors spontaneously organized and danced the large drums passed down from the Gaoshan people in Taiwan. The fishermen dressed up as women, with makeup and powder on their faces, blue cloth strips and sheep's horns on their heads, "gold" earrings on their ears, bracelets on their hands, and anklets on their feet. With the changes of the times, the drum dance has been given new content. This dance adds movements of collision and shoveling each other's shoulders. The dancers draw two red circles on their faces, like little painted faces on the stage, which will make people laugh at a glance. Clothing has also changed, and now the entire set of women's clothing has fish patterns.
Every year during the Lantern Festival, lanterns are held in the Ruoshan area, and drums are played behind the pavilion. Therefore, these fishermen volunteered to entertain themselves without any reward. During that time, the whole Ruoshan was as lively as a wedding. They also invited four relatives and six family members to stay in Ruoshan for a few nights, enjoy the vivid performances of Ruoshan fishermen, and share the joy of Ruoshan fishermen returning home with a full load.
Today, Liruo Dazuogu is no longer Liruo Dazuogu in the original sense. It has become Ruoshan Dazuogu, Shitang Dazuogu and Wenling Dazuogu. On every festive occasion, the Shitang Town Party Committee and Government will organize a large drum troupe to participate in the performance. The drum troupe not only enlivens the cultural life of remote islands, but also enlivens urban culture. If there are any major events in the city, the Shitang Town Government will organize the Ruoshan Drum Troupe to come to the city to show off their fishermen style to the city residents.
