Tongren city, a prefecture-level city in Guizhou Province, is located in the northeast of Guizhou Province, in the hinterland of Wuling Mountain, bordering Huaihua City in Hunan Province in the east and Chongqing City in the north. The northwest is high and the southeast is low. The whole territory is dominated by mountains, and most areas belong to subtropical monsoon humid climate zone.
Historical evolution has a long history. The Qin Dynasty was the hinterland of Qianzhong County, and the Han Dynasty was assigned to Wuling County, while the Shu and Han Dynasties were governed by the county. The Tang Dynasty belonged to Sizhou, Jinzhou and Guizhou. At the end of the Song Dynasty and the beginning of the Yuan Dynasty, there were two propaganda and comfort stations in Sizhou and Sinan. In the Yuan Dynasty, there was a long lawsuit between the soldiers and civilians of Tongren River and barbarians. In the 11th year of Yongle in Ming Dynasty, Sizhou and Sinan Xuanwei were withdrawn, and now Tongren, Sinan, Shiqian and Wu Luo are established in this territory, which is under the jurisdiction of newly-built Guizhou Province. Tongren is the hometown of calligraphy. During the Ming and Qing Dynasties, six calligraphers emerged: Zhou Mian, Zhou, Wang Daoxing, Pan, Yan and Yan Shizhu. There are 2 national nature reserves, 3 national scenic spots, 9 provincial scenic spots, National Mine Park 1 and National Karst Geopark 1. Shanghai-Kunming Railway, Shanghai-Kunming Expressway, Hangrui Expressway, Tongda Expressway and Sijian Expressway pass through the territory.
