What does "East Bed" mean?

The East Bed is the legend that the son-in-law called the son-in-law "East Bed" which originated from the naked of the famous calligrapher in Jin Dynasty in China.

According to legend, during the Jin Dynasty, teacher Ji Jian had a lovely daughter, who was smart and young. Teacher Xi heard that Cheng Dongchuang was in bed.

Wang Dao's sons are all very handsome and plan to marry their children's in-laws. Prime Minister Wang also agreed to this marriage. One day, the doctor sent a guest to the palace to choose a husband, and personally wrote a letter to the Prime Minister Wang. After reading it, the Prime Minister Wang said to the generals, "My sons are in the east wing. Tell Dr. Xi that you can choose any one! " After visiting the East Wing, everyone thanked Wang Dao and hurried back to Long Fu. He replied to the teacher, "Ah, I didn't know that Prime Minister Wang's son was really beautiful and handsome until I arrived. I heard that I chose a son-in-law for you, all of whom are entertaining guests. Some of them are still a little stiff. There is only one young man lying on the east bed with an empty stomach, as if he had never heard of such a thing. " Who knows, after hearing this, Dr. Xi said happily, "Let's choose a man with a bare stomach and a bed as a husband. I'm proud of it. He will be a good son-in-law in the future. " Teacher Chi Jian later learned that this young man was Wang Xizhi, so he married his daughter Xuanxuan to him.

At that time, Wang Xizhi, with his stomach bare and his bed open, was famous for his calligraphy. Therefore, "Lingbian" or "Dong Chuang" became the honorific title for the son-in-law. The appellation of "Lingpi" or "Dongchuang" is generally used to refer to the son-in-law of the other party and the son-in-law of others.
