How to express the theme in calligraphy creation?
There are repetitions and similarities in the creation of classical calligraphy to a great extent. A person can often repeat a hundred similar Tang poems, all of which can be banners, cursive scripts and three lines. If the writing skills are too hard, no one can deny that this 100 work is a good one. But if we want to distinguish the differences, at most, the text content of each Tang poem is different. There is no doubt that there is a lot of ideological laziness and slack in such creation. Since it is a creation, it is only based on the quality of technology, without the support of ideas, ideas that are not implemented in specific works, and no themes. Creation? Where to start?
Classical calligraphy creation is practical writing. The ancients didn't write calligraphy as strictly as they do today? Creation? Concept, so it is understandable to repeat it so many times. Today, there is not much practical demand for calligraphy. The living environment of calligraphy works is firstly the art exhibition hall. When exhibiting works, everyone wants their works to be the most prominent and eye-catching. Therefore, Professor Chen Zhenlian, a doctoral supervisor of calligraphy in China Academy of Fine Arts, put forward a new creative mode-academic calligraphy creation. The calligraphy creation of the new academic school requires the calligraphy works to establish a clear theme, and through the boundaries of the theme, each creation is guaranteed to have its own uniqueness. This requires calligraphers to be thoughtful when creating, and to have ideas, form setting, skill application, theme display and so on for a specific work. Therefore, calligraphy works need a literary theme, and the creator must mobilize all possible elements of calligraphy creation, such as paper, ink, color, form and text content. , through certain methods and means to fully express the theme of the work.
In order to practice the new academic calligraphy creation theory, I try to create with the theme of "gradual approach" After his works were published in Guangxi Youjiang Daily on September 1998, they were widely praised by colleagues in the calligraphy field and were advocates of academic calligraphy. In his letter to me, Professor Chen Zhenlian fully affirmed the work and thought it was well conceived and handled.
The creation of the academic calligraphy work "Approaching" needs strong professional theoretical support and unique insights. I intend to consider the performance of the theme from multiple directions and angles when creating ideas, and the specific methods are as follows:
First, express the theme through the adjustment of paper.
What is the academic calligraphy work Approaching in order to follow the academic calligraphy creation? Form first? I consciously burned the paper from right to left, from more to less. The right edge was tattered and there were sporadic holes in the middle, while the left part of the work maintained a complete edge. Then I mixed strong tea water with khaki Chinese painting pigments to dye the works from right to middle and from thick to light, while the leftmost edge of the works kept the paper fresh and white. At first glance, it looks like a banner, but the words are not square; Like a round fan, but not round. The form of the work produces a hazy and obscure aesthetic feeling, and the ingenious combination of ups and downs of ink dropping and seals blends into a free form of clouds gathering, giving people a feeling of ups and downs after viewing. When people appreciate works, according to the traditional order from right to left, what they see at first is incomplete, disorderly, shabby and yellow, and then complete, straight, white and pure. The texture of the paper before and after suggests that the time is far and near, so that the theme of "gradually approaching" can be seen at a glance.
Second, express the theme through the change of ink color.
Calligraphy techniques include ink method. The amount and shade of ink will affect the visual effect, and the ability to control ink color can measure a calligrapher's writing ability to some extent. The academic calligraphy work "Approaching" is expressed around the theme and exaggerates the ink color. In the first few words, Wang Duo, a famous calligrapher in the Qing Dynasty, added ink, and the amount of ink was enough to overflow, making the whole word ambiguous; In the second half of the work, the pen and ink are tightly collected, and the handwriting is slender and clear, just like a Chinese painting with clear and orderly scenery. When people appreciate from right to left, the words change from hazy to clear, as if a person is coming from a distance. At first, they only saw the general shape of the characters, gradually saw the facial features of Fiona Fang people, and then saw the five senses, nose and eyes. When they were close to their eyes, a mole on their mouth was clearly visible. This change of ink color level coincides with the theme of "gradual approach"
Third, express the theme through the change of book style.
In the history of calligraphy in China, there have been calligraphy styles with their own characteristics, such as seal script, official script, running script, cursive script and regular script. Each calligraphy style has its own strokes and structural rules, and each style has its own aesthetic value. The creation of classical calligraphy is often to write a font, block letters or grass on a piece of propaganda paper. Academic calligraphy creation advocates moving from monotonous writing form to flexible and rich visual form. While adhering to the standard of calligraphy (writing), it gives calligraphy a wider range of materials and artistic expressions. The academic calligraphy work "Approaching" uses a variety of fonts for the diversity of techniques and richness of levels, so that the long history of calligraphy style is instantly presented to the audience. It is worth mentioning that in the second half of the work, a line of printed woodcut words imitating the Song Dynasty was introduced, which is unprecedented in the creation of classical calligraphy.
The first line "Winter" in the academic calligraphy work "Approaching" is written in seal script before and after the Qin Dynasty, the second line "Long gone" is written in the figure of Han Li, and the next line in the penultimate line "Spring is full of you in May" is written in the Jin Dynasty, and then the word "heart" is. Although the fonts are different, the composition is properly connected. And the books that appeared in different periods are arranged from far to near according to the age, and finally realized? Approaching? The theme of the performance. )
It can be said that this multi-style focus on one work has something to do with classical works. The classical works we see now also have inscriptions in another font by later generations. The inscription is not what the original author thought, but when we appreciate these classical works, we feel that the inscription is already a part of the works and does not destroy the aesthetic feeling of the works. At this point, academic calligraphy works should be said to be formed by new discoveries and new inspirations in classical works.
Fourth, express the theme through the meaning of words
The carrier of calligraphy is Chinese characters. A good calligraphy work not only pays attention to form, brush and ink lines, but also the content of words is extremely important. The meaning of the text content is the same as the artistic conception of the pen and ink of the work, which can stimulate the emotions of the appreciator. The writing content selected in the creation of classical calligraphy is full of literary talent and contains more philosophy and poetry of life. The text of the academic calligraphy work Approaching is a lyric of the contemporary popular song I miss you so much: "The cold winter is over, and the spring scenery in May covers my heart". Take the title of the song "I really miss you" as the inscription content. The two parts of the text are arranged reasonably in the work, the key points are clear, and the significance is quite relevant, mainly as follows:
First of all, the text of the work, "The winter has long passed, may spring fill your heart", is to the point. The season of the year lies in spring, which is so beautiful that countless people yearn for it. Now that winter has passed, isn't the bright spring from far to near in expectation? Secondly, the meaning of the song title "I really miss you" used in the autograph is also relevant. These five words vividly show the long-lost lovers' desire for their sweetheart, and their strong desire all urges them to "gradually approach"! Therefore, from the literary significance of the work, the theme of "gradual approach" is revealed implicitly and vividly.
The creation of the academic calligraphy work Approaching is undoubtedly successful. It uses various elements of calligraphy creation in many directions and angles to express the set theme, and strives to pursue the refinement of writing techniques. The implication of seal script center, the rough brushwork of Qin bamboo slips, the bold cursive script, the rigorous style of writing in Tang Dynasty and the natural reaction of font and composition revealed in the works seem arbitrary, but in jurisprudence, it shows the inheritance and recognition of academic works to traditional classics.
