Qi Baishi was born on January 1, 1864 (the 22nd day of the winter month of 1863, the year of Guihai in the lunar calendar) in Xingzi, Baishipu, Xiangtan, Changsha Prefecture, Hunan. Wuxing Doutang. The name is Chunzhi, the courtesy name is Weiqing, and the courtesy name is Lanting. At the age of 27, he changed his name to Huang, with the Chinese character Frequency, also known as Baishishanren, and also as Zhiyuan.

In 1870, he started studying with his maternal grandfather Zhou Yuruo, and often used calligraphy books and thin paper to draw.
