Suzhou has been a cultural center since ancient times. Therefore, there are different views and explanations on the problem that several of the four great talents in Jiangnan are from Suzhou. It is generally believed that Zhu Zhishan and Wen Zhiming are from Suzhou, but Tang Bohu and Chen Chun are not.
Zhu Zhishan (about 1365-14 14) was born in Changshu, Suzhou. He is a literary generalist who is famous for his poems, essays and paintings. His representative works include the seven-character metrical poem Huanxisha Spring Breeze Outside the Door and the prose Flower Xie Hua Tian Fei, which is regarded as one of the "two ancestors in the south of the Yangtze River".
Wen Zhiming (1470-1524) was born in Taibai Mountain and Wuxian County, Suzhou (now Suzhou). He is good at poetry, prose, calligraphy and other art forms, and enjoys a high reputation in the literary world of the Ming Dynasty. His representative works include "Title of Xilin Wall", "After Graduation" and "The Story of Yueyang Tower".
Tang Bohu (about 1500—— about 1569) was born in Shangyu District, Shaoxing City, Zhejiang Province. Although he is not from Suzhou, he has lived and lived in Suzhou for a long time, which has a far-reaching influence on Suzhou culture and art. He is a writer, painter and calligrapher. His masterpieces include novels such as Flower Moon Mark and classic articles such as Preface to Dongyang Ma Sheng.
Chen Chun (1483-1544), whose name is Pi Ling, is from Wuwei County, Anhui Province. He is a master of culture who is famous for his poetry, prose and calligraphy. His representative works include Pipa Xing and Luo Shen Fu.
To sum up, two of the four gifted scholars in Jiangnan are from Suzhou, but Chen Chun is not.
