On the Origin of the Twelve Basic Surnames in China

According to legend, the Yellow Emperor had twenty-five sons, born to four mothers. The Yellow Emperor gave them fourteen surnames and divided them into twelve phratries, namely Ji, Yi, You, Qi, Ji, Teng, Zhen, Xun, Ren, Nuo and Yi. These twelve surnames later evolved into many surnames of China people. In fact, before the Yellow Emperor, there was definitely a surname, but there was no written record to verify it.
