How to view the orienteering map? And how to use the compass?

1. Calibrating the map

Calibrating the map is to make the orientation of the directional map consistent with the current direction. This is the most important prerequisite for using directional maps.

2. Comparing the terrain

To compare the terrain is to make the various features and landforms on the map and the current place "match" one by one through careful observation, that is, they correspond to each other. . There are two main functions of comparing the terrain in orienteering competitions:

1. When the standing point has not yet been determined - only by correctly comparing the terrain can the correct standing point position be found on the map.

2. When the standing point has been determined and the direction of travel needs to be changed - only by comparing the terrain can the best selected travel route be found on the spot.

3. Determine the standing point

Proficiency in various methods of determining the standing point on the map is the key to learning to use the map. For these methods, in addition to remembering their respective steps and essentials, it is especially important to learn to select, use and combine them according to different situations.

How to use the north needle:

1. The north needle must be placed horizontally.

2. Slowly adjust the north needle so that the "north" on the disk coincides with the north on the pointer, so that the true four directions can be found.

3. Although the moon is in the sky, we cannot raise the compass to measure. We must direct our sight vertically from the moon to the ground.

4. Then use the compass to measure the orientation of that point on the ground.

5. When using the compass, the compass must be kept away from steel objects and floors.
