In 734, Yan Zhenqing became a scholar, and in 742, he was appointed as a supervisor to inspect Hedong and Longzhou. When Yan Zhenqing was in Tang Daizong, he was also a senior official of the official department. He was made Duke of Lu Jun, but when he was in Tang Dezong, Li Xilie rebelled, and Qilu refused to let Yan Zhenqing go, ordering him to convey the will to the court. Finally, he was detained by Li Xilie until Li Xilie proclaimed himself emperor and was strangled at the age of 77.
