Liu Zichen’s academic origins

Mr. Liu Zicheng is a descendant of the Guanzhong School. He used the names Zhidu, Zidu, Zidu, Mo Chi, Chi Zhai, the old owner of Tangyuan, Sagashan Min, Jiaohuo Laomin, etc. . He was born on the eighth day of the twelfth lunar month in the third year of the Republic of China (1914) to a medical family in Donglibao, Sanyuan, Shaanxi Province. The surname Liu was from a prominent family in the city. The Liu family in Dongli had close relations with many famous people in Sanyuan.

Mr. Liu Zicheng's fifth uncle, Liu Gongshaowen, was a well-known scholar during the Republic of China, a member of the Tongmenghui, a poet and essayist, and liked to study calligraphy and seal cutting. He once served as Secretary and Deputy Secretary of the Shaanxi Jingguo Army Headquarters. When he was a child, he Influenced by the fifth uncle and gradually influenced. His second uncle, Mr. Ru Yuli, was a famous Xinhai figure. He was an official-sponsored student studying in Japan and an early member of the Tongmenghui. After the Republic of China, he served as the Minister of Audit Department of the Nanjing Government. He was good at literature and history and calligraphy. He studied calligraphy when he was young. Cong Wenduo was influenced and taught by him. Since middle school, Mr. Liu Zichen studied poetry, calligraphy, painting, and text exegesis under the famous scholar He Bozhen. When he was 16 years old, he went to Xi'an to study at Sun Yat-sen University, but was unable to do so due to some reasons.

During this period, I was fortunate to be recommended by my mentor He Bozhen and Li Shouting, the elder of the same city (also known as Bailing, a government-sponsored student studying in Japan, an educator, the former director of the Shaanxi Provincial Department of Education in the Republic of China, and a native of Sanyuan Beicheng). Served in the Provincial Library, Provincial Department of Education, and Xi'an Municipal Government. During the Republic of China, Xi'an had a strong cultural atmosphere, with many academic celebrities and social sages gathering here. In the early 1930s, the cultural society "Xijing Painting and Calligraphy Society" came into being with the support of Yang Hucheng, Shao Lizi, Zhang Hanshan, Kou Shengfu, Zhang Fenghui and others. The society gathered celebrities from all walks of life, gathered in Chang'an, and published "Xijing Painting and Calligraphy Collection". At that time, there was a saying in Xi'an's "cultural circle" that there were "nine old men and one young man", and this "one young man" was Mr. Liu Zichen. So, how did the young Mr. Liu gain recognition and care from the "Nine Elders of Chang'an"? One thing is certain, Mr. Liu's academic achievements have been recognized by the nine elders. During the Republic of China, it was rare for a young man like Mr. Liu to be favored and supported by famous figures and elders. Zhang Hanshan greatly admired Mr. Liu's seal script. Mr. Hanshan once said sincerely: "Come on yourself! I think you can write seal script. Play with it slowly, and don't dare to give it up." Mr. Liu lived up to expectations and worked diligently throughout his life. His books, poems and articles are enough to amaze viewers and be admired by future generations.

Mr. Liu is not only an outstanding calligrapher, but also a descendant of Guan Xue with extensive knowledge. His cultural accumulation and scholarly thoughts also originated from Miyuan, his hometown where he was born and raised. Sanyuan has been famous in the northwest for its pure literary style and numerous sages since ancient times. It has been known as a cultural and educational center since the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Mr. Hengqu, a Neo-Confucian scholar in the Northern Song Dynasty, set the precedent for Guanxue, and through the Ming Dynasty people Wang Shu, Wang Chengyu, Ma Li, Wen Chun, etc. gathered the great achievements of Guanxue, forming the "Sanyuan School" represented by Sanyuan Hongdao Academy. Until the late Qing Dynasty, three educators, He Fuzhai, Liu Guyu, and Zhu Foguang, were all academic leaders. As Mr. Yu Youren recalled in "My Youth": "Shaanxi's most vigorous and thorough promotion of new learning should be commended. "Mr. Miyuan Zhu Foguang", and said: "At that time, there were two major families of scholars in Guanzhong: one was Mr. Miyuan He Fuzhai (Ruilin) ??who was the leader of Neo-Confucianists; the other was Mr. Liu Guyu (Guangfan) of Xianyang who was the leader of Confucianists." Although Mr. Liu Guyu is from Xianyang, he has been a frequent visitor to Sanyuan for decades. He founded the "Lixue Zhai" to widely attract the children of farmers, industrialists and businessmen to learn new courses, broaden the people's wisdom, establish rural schools all over, popularize public education, and promote the academic style. There is no distinction between family status and poverty. Miyuan He Fuzhai took Neo-Confucianism as his sect and was a banner of Guan Studies research in the late Qing Dynasty. He also founded the "Qinglu Academy" in Yukou Mountain, Luqiao, Miyuan, and published the "Qinglu Series", which allowed the Guan Studies ideological system to flourish and continue. In addition to his studies, Mr. He was also good at calligraphy. His regular script has a rigorous structure and his cursive writing is vigorous and his calligraphy has been spread throughout Guanzhong. Mr. Yu Youren once wrote a poem praising: "Returning to fasting, cursive writing and seal script, decorating the pavilion against the setting sun." , Lintong Huaqingchi's "Leshan Pavilion" stele is his representative work of calligraphy.

He Ruilin's disciple, Mr. He Bozhen, was also a famous Guanxue master in the early Republic of China. He inherited his family's studies since childhood, adhered to the right path, and studied the studies of "Zhou, Cheng, Zhang, and Zhu" deeply.

He was also proficient in literature, history, lexicon, and text exegesis. He was extremely rigorous in his scholarship. He once wrote a couplet and lamented: "In ancient times, there was Li Sixun in ancient times, but there is no Yangtze cloud in literacy today." Then he placed his hope on his disciple Liu Zicheng and entrusted him to make achievements in the research of ancient philology. Mr. Bo Zhen is proficient in calligraphy. He can trace the ancient seal script to the present and express his own ideas. Xingkai combines Yan and Liu into one furnace, which is closely based on He Zizhen's strengths. He has profound attainments. His calligraphy style is so beautiful that he can be called a master of modern calligraphy. Mr. Bo Zhen also said: "Don't enlighten chaos." From this statement, it is not difficult to see that Mr. Bo Zhen has requirements in selecting disciples. Mr. Liu's youthful talent, extraordinary intelligence, modesty and prudence are the keys to being recognized by his mentor. Mr. Liu's academic thoughts are also benefited from the words and deeds of his mentor, "If you don't learn from the ancients, it is impossible. Simply learning from the ancients has nothing to do with me." This saying stayed with Mr. Liu throughout his life and benefited him a lot, and Mr. He's Mr. Liu's character and knowledge were also admired and admired throughout his life. Mr. Liu has been a lifelong student, studied hard, and achieved great success. Despite this, Mr. Wang still claimed that he was "unskilled and deeply indebted to his teacher". The academic thoughts and scholarly spirit passed down by Mr. Liu Zichen will always be regarded as a model by later scholars.
